Bree’s POV
Dax hastily moved away from her and stared at me with his mouth slightly open. He was clearly shocked to see me. Of course, he was.
While his wife and mate was away in the infirmary, lying unconscious, he thought it best to bring in another woman whom he claimed to be his just best friend and f**k her right in our bed.
I couldn't believe my eyes. Indeed, I could barely say a word to him. All I did was stare at them both as tears slowly slid down my cheeks.
“I'm sorry, Bree. It's not what you think,” was all he could say as Gina, his supposed best friend since childhood hurriedly covered up. “Please, I can explain…”
I shook my head in utter disappointment as I leaned back on the wall with folded arms.
When I got mated to Dax, I thought I had finally found the man of my dreams; a man who wouldn't leave me for anything or do anything to hurt me. But, I was clearly wrong.
I lived a lie for several years and I couldn't even tell. My quest to be loved and accepted led me into the hands of a deceiver and I hated myself for that.
“I… I can't believe you'd do this to me,” I finally managed to stutter, sniffing in my tears as much as I could. “After everything we've been through, this is how you choose to treat me? How could you?”
He got out of bed and drew close to me as he got dressed. “I didn't mean to. It was her who made me do this,” he said, choosing to blame Gina instead. “I tried to fight her off but she was too strong. She came on me with her black lingerie. You know how much I loved that and since you weren't around, I couldn't fight against the desire but I promise, this would never happen again. I swear.”
The more he spoke, the angrier I got. It was a shock that he didn't realise how shameless he was. He tried to pin his disgraceful act on my absence. He did everything but take responsibility for his actions and that only made things worse.
“I was in the infirmary, Dax. I laid there unconscious and you didn't even care to show up,” I pointed out to him. “You didn't care if I'd make it out alive or dead. All you could think of was having s*x with another woman. And you lied to me that you were just best friends. Who knows how long you both have been doing this? I can't stand you both right now. Gush!”
I pushed him aside and walked straight to the wardrobe to pick up a few clothes. “Don't do this, Bree. We can talk this out,” Dax urged but I refused to hear him out. There was nothing to hear anyway.
As soon as I was done packing up a few clothes in a small, black bag, I turned to leave but Dax blocked me off. Gina, tired of all the drama that unfolded before her, hissed and rose from the bed.
“I'll see you soon, sweetheart,” she said, a sultry look on her face as she pecked him on the cheek before leaving.
He didn't try to stop her from kissing him. He didn't even tell her off or anything. He just stood there and watched her leave. It was only after she had gone out of the room that he returned his gaze to me looking sorry once again.
“You're pathetic,” I voiced in disappointment, shoving him out of my way once again as I headed straight to my friend's house.
Getting to Anya's house, I walked straight into her room, ignoring her questions as soon as she opened the door. “I've been such a fool,” I cried as she walked into her room looking concerned.
“Hey, don't say that,” she urged me, placing her hand on my back with her face close to mine. “Please, stop crying. What happened?”
“It's Dax! How could I have thought that someone like him could ever fall in love with a woman like me,” I ranted, wriggling free from her hold. “I just got back from the infirmary where the nurse revealed to me that I'm pregnant. I went back home to disclose the news to my mate only to find him having s*x with his so-called best friend…”
“Gina?”
“Who else? I couldn't believe my eyes. He was behind her as she bent on all fours…” I paused to wipe the tears from my eyes as the image of what happened flashed in my head once again. “I always knew deep down that I didn't deserve him but why would he lie to me? Why would he make me feel like he loved me like I meant the world to him when I didn't?”
“I believe you need to hear him out first,” Anya suggested but I wasn't having it. I wanted nothing to do with that man ever again. All I wanted was to be free from him, to go get my things and leave his house. The pain was too much for me to bear.
“You're not undeserving of love, my friend. No one is,” she continued, using a handkerchief to wipe the tears off my cheeks but I cried some more. “Look at you, girl. You're a beauty to behold. Any man would be keen to have you as a wife.”
She was right about one thing. I was a very beautiful lady. I was 5’7 feet tall which I thought was slightly above average for a lady. I had bright green eyes and C-cup breasts which complimented my hour glass figure.
“But beauty isn't everything. The value of a woman is not determined by the beauty she possesses,” I pointed out to her. “I'm only a wolfless Omega and he is the Alpha. Perhaps, that's why he isn't satisfied with me.”
“Or maybe it's the child? Maybe he wants to have an heir?” Anya suggested, spreading her arms. “You know how unreasonable men can be when it has to do with children, especially for Alphas.”
“But he waited for so long, Anya. It's been three years!” I sobbed, standing on my feet and pacing around the room. “Why now? Why did he choose to betray me at the point where I just got pregnant for him? This was supposed to be our happy day but he ruined it. Now, he's never going to have the chance to see this child.”
“You won't let him know?” She asked, wide-eyed in shock.
“Why would I? I'm never letting him anywhere close to my child's life.”
That night, as we sat at the dining table to eat, a knock sounded on Anya's door and we turned to each other, wondering who it might be.
“Expecting anyone?” I asked, uncovering the plate of food to reveal a mouthwatering pasta, garnished with some vegetables and two boiled eggs.
“Not at all,” she shrugged and rose to her feet. “I guess I'd have to find out.”
“I'll go with you then. It's quite late so you have to be careful,” I said to her, rising to my feet and we both walked to the door to see who it was.
On opening the door, I couldn't believe who stood in front of me…
“Gina?” I gasped. “What the hell are you doing here?”
She smiled and hit her hands together with a smirk on her face. “I just came here to let you know that you're the dumbest person that I've ever known,” she mocked. “I couldn't stop myself from doing that because you're just so stupid. I mean, how else could you have believed Dax when he told you that we were just best friends?”
“Don't let her words get to you, Bree,” Anya urged me as my hands began to vibrate due to the rage I felt. “It's not worth it.”
“Dax and I have been in love since we were kids,” she continued. “We both couldn't wait to come of age because we burned deeply for each other. Ever since we've been having s*x with each other as often as possible. There's no week that we didn't have s*x at least thrice. Sometimes we do more than double that.”
I watched on as she kept on talking about her affair with my mate and I wondered what kind of man I married. Tears threatened to flow out of my eyes once more but I fought it, unwilling to let her see that her words were piercing my heart like a poisoned arrow.
I balled up my fists by my side intent on using my magic on her but stopped at the last moment, seeing she wasn't that important anyway.
Instead, I banged the door on her face as she spoke and walked past into the bedroom. I had lost all my appetite and all I wanted was to cry my lungs out.
Thankfully, Anya was beside me all through the night. She lent me her shoulder to cry on until I finally fell asleep. A beautiful friend, she was.
The next morning, I quickly got out of bed and gently pushed Anya's hand off me. I had my bath as quickly as I could and immediately headed back home to meet up with Dax.
He opened the door as soon as I knocked, a huge grin on his face as he probably thought I had come to reconcile with him.
“Welcome, my love,” he greeted, kissing me on the cheek before wrapping his arms around me but I quickly shoved him away from me and slapped him hard across the face.
“Stay the hell away from me!” I barked at him, walking past him and making my way to the room.
Quickly, I packed up my things into my large green bag. “I'm leaving this Pack,” I revealed to him as he rushed into the room.
“You don't have to do this,” he pleaded, trying to touch me but I quickly put out my hand to warn him. “Please, Bree. Let's talk this over. I'm truly sorry about what happened. I swear. Remember that I've always loved and cherished you. Don't throw it all away because of one foolish mistake that I made.”
“A mistake, you said?” I asked, tossing a dress into the bag before turning to face him. “Gina, your so-called best friend came over to see me last night and she told me everything, Dax. You don't need to pretend anymore, okay?”
Stunned, he opened his mouth to speak but the words just won't come out. Of course, he had to be tongue-tied. That wasn't certainly not part of the plan.
“Look, whatever she must have told you is a lie, Bree,” he shamelessly denied, refusing to give up. “We are nothing but best friends and what happened the last time was nothing more than a fling. It is you that my heart beats for, Bree. I cannot lie to you.”
I couldn't help but burst into laughter. “What have you been doing since, if not telling lies to me, you heartless man?” I chided him. “You must think that I'm a fool. She told me that you both have been having s*x since we got together. I can't stand you, Dax.”
With that, I picked up my bag and tried to leave but he blocked me off. He didn't look apologetic anymore. He glared at me with a stern demeanour.
“I can't let you leave, Bree.”
