"She's an angel, sissy. I love her so much." My sister is gushing about her newborn daughter. She just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She risked calling me on this secure line to share the news. "I wish you are here. I name her after our Mama."
"Seeing her photo right now, I wish I'm there, sissy." I gushed too. It saddened me, knowing it would take a while to see them and hold my niece.
My sister and I continued to talk while she was waiting for her husband.
"We need to go now!" I heard my best friend's hurried voice appear in the line after banging on the door and started moving around cursing.
"Why?" My sister asked her husband. I only catch a few words but impossible. We were careful.
"What's going on? You just give birth. You have to take a rest." I said in a panicked voice. "Please tell me the truth?"
"They found us." She simply answered. I heard a noise in the background. I know she is changing her clothes.
"Talk to me," I beg. My husband stood next to me while we listened to their movement.
"They are here in the hospital. We need to leave before they can catch us," my best friend answered.
"How? Only a few people knew where you were, and those people were our trusted allies," I exclaimed. I will not believe someone would betray us.
"I know. I have a feeling someone close to them found out, a traitor," he agreed. "We can't take our child, Sav. With them in our trial, it will be difficult for her. I can't do that to our child. Please protect her."
My tears flow, and my heart hurts from the sadness in his voice. This day is supposed to be their happiest day but turns into a nightmare.
"Drive to the next location, guys. I will send someone to secure your baby," I instructed.
"Please watch our baby for us, sissy. I wish we could bring her with us, but it's too dangerous right now. She has a tracker in her bracelet; only you can unlock it because she has the same bracelet as we have."
Hearing her sister's frantic voice, begging for the sake of her child's safety, breaks her heart. It hurt her. This situation made her more determined to protect her niece in everything she could.
"Stay safe and heal yourself, sissy. I promise you; I will take care of her. One day, two of you will be free again, and whoever did to us will be gone, " I uttered. I feel hopeless.
All she can hear is her sister's loud cry on the phone, while his husband, who is also my best friend, is trying to calm his wife. Her tears keep flowing freely in her eyes. She can't even tell when they are going to see each other again. They were now in danger, and whoever the traitor was, knew their identities and exposed them. They were hiding for months after the head of the crime syndicate found out their roles to eliminate their partner. They are out for revenge.
"Goodbye, sissy. We love you."
Before she could answer, she heard a loud noise coming from their line. She releases her phone, causing it to fall on the floor. Her knees buckled which made her slide on the couch shakily.
"They are gone." She uttered silently and sobbed. She just lost two people she loves. They paid the price of protecting someone because of their jobs. Their child is now parent-less because of it too.
She vows to avenge them, and she won't rest until she finds out who is behind this. Those bastards better hide in the darkest corner of the world because I'm coming for them.
She felt her husband hug her from behind, kissing and caressing her while she grieved. They remain in the same position until she calms down. She was thankful for having a wonderful husband to lean on.
"It's time to stand strong, my love. We have a mission to fulfill. Our niece needs you right now," her husband uttered, reminding her.
She immediately stiffens and strengthens herself. New determination ran through her body. She won't fail them. She made a promise. She has to make sure her niece is safe without linking her to them. Her niece needs to hide, and only one person can help her.
She kissed her husband passionately and uttered thank you before pulling him toward their office. She took the secured line and dialed the number she knew by heart—her trusted friend capable of making her niece disappear under the radar of her parent's enemy.
"You called? " The voice from the line answered. We are used to this kind of conversation. No pleasantry is needed.
"I need your help. I want you to steal my niece Zaila, born prematurely hours days ago in the location that my husband sent you."
She doesn't need to glance at her husband to know if he sends the address of the hospital where her niece is; he's a hacker, for Christ's sake. "Cover your tracks and make sure Zaila will appear dead to them."
She hears him type something on his laptop while she explains what happened a few minutes ago.
"Granted. I'm sorry for your loss Sav. You know how important they were to us. I will give you a call once I get her. She will be safe with us," he responded.
"I never doubt that. Take care of Zaila, and when the time is right, I will take her out of your responsibility. " My heart is breaking; my throat is starting to hurt since I'm trying not to cry again.
"We will. Zaila will be safe here."
"From now on, name her Rainey means Queen-like my sister wanted her to be. Thank you."
"Beautiful name. And you're welcome. You and your best friend have saved our lives countless times; it's about time I return the favor for both of you. I will raise her like my own."
She ends the call. Her tears silently fall on her face again. She did the best she could for now. She can only watch her grow from afar and make sure no harm will come her way.
"Stay strong, baby Zaila Rainey," she whispered in the air. "I have a feeling that you are going to be the key to unraveling your parent's death someday."
