Chapter 9

Aria The moment Kael left the room, an eerie silence filled the space. It wasn’t the peaceful kind of silence that helped you gather your thoughts, it was heavy and full of the unknown. My heart skipped a beat as the questions swam through my head like a ball of barbed wire, making it impossibly hard to breathe. I retraced the last couple of hours in my mind, as I tried to somehow figure out, why I found myself in this place, amongst strangers, lying at the heart of a pack I didn't know. Just as I was starting to sink deeper into my thoughts, there was a soft knock at the door. My eyes followed the sound, and in walked a nurse with gentle brown eyes, a friendly smile, and a clipboard in hand. “Good afternoon, Aria, right?” She asked, her voice light and reassuring. I nodded stiffly, my body tensing as she approached. “I’m just here to check on you, make sure everything’s okay. How are you feeling?” She asked, flipping through the papers on her clipboard. “I…I'm okay,” I replied, but my voice didn’t sound very convincing, not to me, anyway. The nurse, whose name tag read "Miriam," sat on the edge of my bed, and her face softened. “You seem a little nervous. I promise, there’s no need to be. This is just a routine checkup.” Her calm demeanor should’ve put me at ease, but instead, it made me more aware of how out of place I felt. I forced myself to respond to her questions, my voice trembling but compliant as she inquired about my pain if I recalled what happened, and if I had any allergies. I know she meant well, but the little questions seemed like an interrogation. “I…I don't remember everything,” I mumbled, glancing away. “It’s all kind of a blur.” “That’s perfectly normal after what you’ve been through,” she reassured me, placing her hand gently on mine. “You’ve had quite the ordeal. But the good news is, you’re doing a lot better now. So much so that we’ll be discharging you tomorrow.” I blinked at her. Discharged? Tomorrow? The thought of leaving the safety of this hospital room and facing whatever came next felt like a heavy weight settling on my chest. What would happen after this? Where would I even go? Before I could ponder too deeply on those questions, the nurse got up and smoothed down her scrubs. “I'm going to give you something to help you rest. You’ve earned a good night’s sleep.” She passed me a cup with a pill in it. I swallowed it down, it left a bad taste in my mouth, and I lay back against the pillows. “Get some rest, okay?” Miriam said, giving me one last reassuring smile before she bustled out of the room. After the door clicked shut behind her, I exhaled the air I hadn't realized I'd been holding. The medication was already doing its work, making my body feel heavy and my mind relaxed. I looked out the window at the sunset, the sky painted in orange and pink colors. It was beautiful, peaceful even. But, I couldn't help thinking tomorrow would be the beginning of something I wasn't prepared for. With that thought, so disturbing, I fell asleep. The following morning, when I got up, the room was bathed in the soft light of dawn. My body was refreshed but my mind was still racing with uncertainty. I hadn’t even had a chance to sit up before the door burst open, and in rushed a bubbly and cheerful Kiera beaming from ear to ear. “Good morning!” she practically sang as she bounced toward me. “I hope you’re ready because today’s going to be amazing!” I blinked at her, still groggy from sleep. “Uh, ready for what exactly?” Kiera clapped her hands together. “You’re getting discharged today! And I’m here to show you around. No new girl has been at the pack house in, like, forever. It’s going to be so much fun!” Before I could respond, Kiera’s expression shifted slightly, her eyes glazing over for a second. She was having a mind link, I recognized it from my old pack, though I’d never been included in any. I watched, feeling a strange pang of longing as she communicated so effortlessly with whoever that was. When she snapped back to reality, she grinned at me again. “That was Kael. He told me where you’re going to be staying. You’re in for a treat.” Kiera grinned. “You’ll be staying in the pack house with us! It's huge, but believe me, it feels more like a family house than anything else. “There's always something happening, and you'll never be lonely.” I bit my lip, unsure of how to respond. The idea of living with everyone really disturbed me somewhat, but there was something about Kiera's enthusiasm that was almost reassuring. Kiera must have sensed my hesitation because she placed a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds. Come on, let’s get out of here.” She helped me get dressed and led me down to the parking lot, where her bright orange Mini Cooper stood out like a sore thumb among the more practical vehicles. I couldn't help but smile slightly at the vision. “Hop in!” she said, opening the door for me. “We’ve got so much to do today.” As she started the car and pulled out of the hospital parking lot, Kiera began chatting animatedly. “So, you’re going to love it here. We have the best stores, this awesome spa, and don’t even get me started on the cinemas and karaoke spots! Oh, and the nightclub is to die for.” I listened, letting her excited chatter wash over me, though I couldn’t help but feel a bit self-conscious. I was a servant in my old pack, and even with Alpha Mason as my mate, I was a girl who couldn't lift her head if she didn't have to and followed every order given to her. The idea of being part of a pack like this one, where everyone seemed to have their roles and lives, made me feel small. What if I didn’t fit in here? “What’s the pack like?” I asked, trying to change the subject. “Well, you’re in luck! We’re a pretty organized bunch,” Kiera began, glancing over at me as she navigated the road. “Of course, Alpha Kael is in charge. He leads the pack with a firm hand, but he’s also really protective of us. His role isn’t just about giving orders. He also ensures everyone’s safety, keeps the pack thriving, and handles all the big decisions that affect us.” I nodded, trying to absorb everything. I knew what an alpha was, but hearing about Kael specifically made the idea of pack life more real. “Then there’s the Beta,” Kiera continued. “That’s Jaxon, my brother. He’s Kael’s second-in-command, and he’s responsible for making sure the alpha’s orders are carried out. He also steps in when Kael’s not around. Jaxon’s great, super reliable, and he always has the pack’s best interests at heart.” “And the Gamma?” I asked, remembering the term from what little I knew of packs. “Ah, yes! The Gamma is third in command,” Kiera explained. “In our pack, that’s Ren. He’s in charge of the warriors and making sure they’re all trained and ready to defend the pack. He’s tough but fair. Our warriors are some of the best around, and Ren makes sure they stay that way.” I sank back into my seat, trying to make sense of all this new information. The structure of this pack was the opposite of everything I had experienced before. In my old pack, there had been little room for order or purpose, just survival. “What about the others?” I asked, genuinely curious now. “Well, we have a whole bunch of ranks,” Kiera said, clearly excited to continue. “The warriors are, of course, super important. They protect us from any threats, whether it’s rogues or other packs trying to encroach on our territory. But we also have Sigmas, who are more like strategists. They handle the logistics which is planning out defenses, working with the warriors, and making sure our borders are secure.” I raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t know about Sigmas. That sounds… really organized.” Kiera laughed. “Oh, we are! We take our safety seriously. But it’s not just about fighting and protecting the borders. We also have Omegas who take on more roles than you’d think. In a lot of packs, Omegas are treated as nothing more than maids or servers, but here, we value them for a lot more.” I glanced at her, intrigued. “What do they do?” “Omegas in our pack are like the glue that holds everything together,” Kiera explained. “They help with administrative tasks, coordinate events, manage pack resources, and make sure everything runs smoothly. Sure, some of them handle housekeeping duties, but that’s just one part of their role. They’re also healers, counselors, and they help with food preparation for large pack gatherings. Honestly, they’re some of the most essential people in the pack.” Her words took me by surprise. In my old pack, Omegas were always treated as less than, just servants who were expected to obey without question. But here, it seemed like they had a real place, a purpose. “That’s… really different from what I’m used to,” I admitted softly, feeling a twinge of shame at the comparison. Kiera shot me a sympathetic glance. “I figured as much. A lot of packs don’t value their Omegas the way they should. But we believe that everyone has a role to play, and every role is important. It doesn’t matter if you’re an alpha or an omega. Without one, the pack wouldn’t function properly.” I nodded, absorbing her words. There was something comforting about the way she described pack life. It sounded like a real society, a place where everyone was needed. As we drove deeper into pack territory, I felt panic rising within me. This world was so different from the world I was used to. The idea of having a role, a purpose, was exciting and terrifying. What if I wasn’t good enough? What if I could not meet the expectations of this pack? As we pulled up to the pack house, my heart stopped. It was massive, larger, and more beautiful than I could have imagined. Its magnitude only made me more insignificant, like I wasn't supposed to be here. Kiera glanced at me, her smile fading slightly. “Hey, you okay?” I forced a smile. “Yeah, just… nervous, I guess.” She gave me a reassuring pat on the arm. “Don’t worry. You’re going to love it here.” I wasn’t sure if I believed her. Standing there, gazing up at this monstrosity of a building, I felt even more like a misplaced individual than before. How could I, a wolf-less omega, who was treated like trash and easily dumped by her mate ever fit into a place like this?
