I move slowly along the counter, making sure that every single one of their gazes remains pinned on me. In the meantime, I take my time picking my food, wanting for the whole table to be unable to talk as they watch me. By the time I’m done, I have to tell myself that I won’t take a single glance in their direction. Once I turn around, I go straight to the first empty table that I find. The closer to the middle it is, the better. I want to be on display for everyone today. Let them see that I’m thriving even when I’m alone.
