He knew something was wrong even before he pushed open the broken door. The street stood quiet, no birds sang, and when he came around the corner he stopped, the frown biting deep. The atmosphere pressed around him, a dreadful sense of foreboding seeping into his very soul. A crash from a nearby shutter as it closed caused him to whirl, but all that followed was the slam of cross beams, the shutting out of the world. He edged forward, on high alert, ready to defend himself from any attack but as he drew nearer to his mother"s house, he realized nobody lurked about. Nikolias took a breath and went inside.
