He had never thought of it before, but he decided now that his wife should be a good rider. He had found in the past how bitterly women who did not ride resented being left behind when their husbands went hunting without them. He himself was a hard rider and he thought it unlikely that a woman would be able to keep up with him. At any rate there would be plenty of things at Rock Castle to occupy a wife and, although he was prepared to give some of his time to teaching and being with her, he would still be able to keep a great deal of his independence.
