Sassy
Two: Lyra
I am put into a rolling cell with five other women. All of us are tied up with gags in our mouths. I’m drifting in and out of sleep from whatever drug they gave me to keep me quiet and calm. I have no will to fight at all. It really pisses me off that I can’t even keep my eyes open. I hear the door on our cell being opened and closed. Then I hear a voice calling to me. “Miss, Miss come on wake up. You need to eat something or the drugs will end up making you very sick. Come on Miss.” I feel her pulling on my arm. I crack open my eyes and see a woman about my age, in her mid to late twenty’s. “Hi my name is Tabby. I’m going to feed you some food. It’s not the greatest but I can guarantee that there are no drugs in it okay.” She says as she is taking off my gag. “Thank you so much for taking that nasty thing out of my mouth Tabby.”
She gives me a small smile. “What is your name Miss?” I give her a look and decide that I like this woman. “I’m called Lyra. Thank you for the food.” She nods her head as she raises the spoon to my mouth. I take the bite of food. It tastes like beef stew, not too bad. “You are very lucky that you have been chosen for the Arena.” I look at her wondering what she is talking about. “Tabby, what’s the Arena?” She looks at me like I’m from a different planet. Well, I guess I sort of am. “It’s the chance for you to reclaim your freedom. As long as you don’t get killed and beat all of your opponents.” I nod my head. Okay, so it’s a good thing that I had finished my training to become a Priestess. That is the main point of our training besides our spiritual training for our magic. Okay, I think I can deal with fighting as long as I don’t have to kill anyone.
Tabby keeps on feeding me. “So, tell me if I’m lucky to be chosen for the Arena what do the others end up doing?” She looks at me with the saddest expression on her face. “We become the slaves of the Palace if you could call it that. I have been a slave since my family was caught when I was six years old.” I see the tears swimming in her eyes. “Tabby what’s wrong?” I ask her. “I really shouldn’t be telling you all of this. I could get into big trouble.” I look at her. “I don’t know about you Tabby but I could really use a friend here.” She looks at me surprised. “Do you mean it. You want me to be your friend?” I look at this poor abused woman that has no self-worth. “Well, you look like you could use one and I know I could. I just don’t want to get you in any kind of trouble.” Tabby looks at me with a small smile on her face. “We will just have to keep it quiet so neither one of us gets into trouble. “Now what were you going to tell me. What made you so sad just a moment ago?”
Tabby looks at me with that same sad face. It makes me want to give her a hug. Damn these ropes. “When my family was taken it was my mom, dad, and older brother. My mom was killed on the way to the Palace while my dad and brother tried fighting their way to her. They were put in the Fighting Arena and both died in their first fight. So please be careful and don’t be scared to kill. They have no problem with killing you.” All of a sudden right then Star yelled at Tabby to hurry up and feed the others. She climbs into the cell and kicked Tabby in the side of her head to get her to move quicker. I put my head down in submission. Maybe I should just watch and see exactly what I’m dealing with before I try to escape again. I watch as Tabby is feeding the others and notice that she has a limp and favors her left arm. She most definitely has had a rough life. I can’t imagine the pain this woman has suffered thus far.
Star stays at the entrance of the cell as Tabby keeps on feeding the other women that are tied up. I start to feel drowsy again. I close my eyes to try and get some rest. With all the trauma to my head and body. I need rest to recover my strength. As I fall asleep, I hear my mother calling me. “Bean oh Bean come to me Bean we need to talk.” I feel myself floating downward until my toes touch the ground. I look around the beautiful meadow at the midnight hour that has glowing butterflies dancing around the flowers. I see my mother sitting on a flat top boulder.” I run to her mom, mom your alive” I say with tears running down my face. My mom looks at me with a sad expression on her face. “Oh, baby Bean. I didn’t make it honey. I was killed instantly by that arrow. It pierced my heart and I breathed my last breath as the rifted closed.”
I shake my head at her. “How can you be here if you are dead mom. I don’t understand.” I say to her. As I climb up onto the boulder to grab her into a hug. She still smells exactly the same as she always does. Makes me want to cry. To me she smells like home and it hurts my heart to know that she really is dead. “Bean you have to listen to me okay. I don’t’ have a lot of time.” I sit back and grab her hand holding it in my lap. I just need to touch her. “Okay mom. What do I need to know?” She looks at me. “You my daughter are my strength and reason for living. It hurts my heart to think you have to do this by yourself.” I see tears gathering in her eyes. “I was told to send you to this time and place by the Goddess. She told me I would know the right time to open the rift to send you. She told me that in this time and place is where your destiny awaits you.”
I shake my head. “I don’t want to be in this place where I don’t know anyone. These women are cruel to others. Beating them, making them be slaves or forcing them to kill one another for a chance at freedom. Mom, please I don’t want to be here.” I say to her crying. She gives me a stern look. “That’s enough Lyra. You have been trained to be a Priestess of the Moon Goddess. Start acting like it. You are no longer a child. You are a twenty-four-year-old woman. I have raised you to be calm and strong. Remember to keep an eye out and do what you were trained to do. Follow the teaching of our Temple and you cannot go wrong.” I dry my tears and hold my head up high. “I understand mother. I will make you and the Moon Goddess proud.” She smiles a bright smile. “That’s my Bean. Remember I love you and no matter what I will always be here and here.” She says pointing at my heart and my head. “Now it’s time for me to go. The Moon Goddess is giving me the chance to be reborn. Goodbye my Bean. Remember to love your Mate unconditionally when you find him.”
I wake up to bright sunshine crying my eyes out. I know that was my mother and that was the last time I will ever see and talk to her. I’m glad though at least my last memory of her won’t be of an arrow piercing her heart. I am troubled by what she has told me. That my fate is here in this world and to love my Mate unconditionally when I meet him. Well, that could only mean that I’m going to be tested over and over to reach my Goddess given rewards. Only the strong are rewarded for all their hard efforts. I take a couple of deep breaths of fresh air. I look around and notice that we are coming up to a town. The smell of fresh baked bread comes to me on a breeze. The smell makes my stomach growl. I look around at the others tied up in the cell with me. They have scared looks on their faces. This is the first time I’ve seen the other prisoners faces looking around instead of staring at their laps. I try talking to one of them.
“psssst. Hey do you know where we are?” The woman right next to me looks me in the eye and says: “Our own funerals.” I look at her surprised such a thing came out of her mouth. “Well that sounds like such fun.” I respond and get a snort out of her. Well at least she still has a sense of humor. The five of our rolling cells come to a stop in front of what looks like a horse barn. Looking further ahead I see at least ten more rolling cells. Just how many are there I wonder. I see the warriors start to open the doors on the cells and leading the women into the barn. Well, I guess this is my new home.
