Prologue
“Haisley… It’s your mom?”, “Yeah, what about her?” “She was involved in a car accident…”. I look up from my laptop and push my glasses to the top of my head, I nervously tuck my thick black hair behind my ears and stand from my desk. “I’ve got to go, Jane, Please call Sydney and get her to pick Harper and Harlow up from school…” With that, I ran out of the office and raced to the hospital. “I’m here for Lynn Carmichael.” The lady rushes me down the passage to the nearest waiting room. “Dad? What are you doing here?” “Hais… Mom…” was all he said and he dropped to his knees.  “where is my mother?” I scream at a nurse. “I will get the doctor Miss.” She says running off. Moments later, “Miss Carmichael?” “It’s Andrews, but my mother is Lynn Carmichael…” “I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but your mother didn’t make it… she had internal bleeding, she has a severe head injury on impact… I’m sorry…”. The doctor leaves, I lean against the wall and let out an earth Shattering scream as the tears roll down my face. “I’ve got you my girl.” “so do I…” “I do too…” I feel multiple arms wrap around me. The tears fall from my face. My best friend Cairo, My Aunts Nicole and Nicky, all three wrap their arms around me. I hear my Aunt Samantha talking to the nurse, and My aunt Roxanne. We stay in this position for what feels like forever. Until I finally stand to compose myself.  I look over to my dad who is crying into my Aunt Roxi’s Arms. I roll my eyes. Wipe my tears, tuck my shirt in, and put my heels back on that I had just thrown off earlier. “Hais, are you okay?” Cairo asked. “I’m not, but I must be I suppose…” I hear running through the halls and suddenly I am engulfed in a warm hug from my last Aunt Adalee. “I’m so sorry Haisley… I know your mom was dear to you, she was dear to all of us…” “thank you… Aunt Adi.” I nod and compose myself once more. I walk up to the nurse's table. “I would like to make arrangements for my mother to be taken to the crematorium please…” she nods and starts with her arrangements. My name is Haisley Andrews. I am the Eldest daughter of Lynn Carmichael and Frankie Andrews. I’m 22 years old and I have long straight black hair and baby blue eyes. My figure is slender but I have large breasts and long legs. People would describe me as a twin to my beautiful mother. I would have never said previously looking in a mirror that I was beautiful. My mother was beautiful, I just have some of her features. Which I am grateful for. My mother was always a single mother. We lived on a farm growing up that was owned by My mother's youngest sister Adalee. So she helped me grow. Her and George, her husband, ran the farm. We left because my mother met her late husband Roger. He wasn’t the best of husbands in my honest opinion but she birthed two more beautiful daughters from that marriage before he got alcohol poisoning and eventually passed away. My mother became a single parent once again raising three girls. She was an insurance broker. I left school to help my mom when she retired. Her pension wasn’t enough to cover all of the expenses. So I wrote my first book, then my second and they kept on being written. I kept on being paid for my small romance novels. My mom was always proud. If I can describe my father… Well, he is what some call a scavenger. He was an abusive man from what I know. He never paid child support to help my mom, and he has a keen liking in prostitutes and gambling… My mother is the oldest of five other siblings. Nicky and Nicole, who are twins, Samantha, Roxanne, and Adalee. My two younger sisters are Harper who is 15 and Harlow who is 12.  They are of Latin blood so they are both olive-skinned, but have these beautiful brown eyes, and black hair. I sit patiently in the waiting room of an old friend and coworker of my mother’s, Mr. Wilson. He had been nominated to read my mother's will out. I sat alone, that's Until my father arrived. My eyes grow wide, and I have a stern look on my face. Before I can say anything the receptionist calls us in. “Mr. Wilson will be right in. I’m so sorry about your loss. Lynn was such a kind, beautiful-hearted woman.” “thank you Rebecca…” I responded, and smile then turning to my father who just nods… agreeing with what Rebecca said. Once she closed the door and we were seated. He had a small smirk on his face. “Stop acting like a damn grieving widow Dad!” I yell but in a whisper. “You know Hais, your mom was a good woman…” “please speak s**t to someone else, and not me… She was a good woman when it suited you. When she gave her last penny to you so that you can go and gamble she was good to you. Making like you were without food but you were without your damn addiction… Why are you even here?” he rolls his eyes at me. “Listen kiddo, me and your mom had an intense bond, I’m sure she left me something. She would never have forgotten about me. You know how your mother was…” Now I’m the one rolling my eyes. “Please, Dad! Mom had hardly anything, what could she have possibly left you, if she did I would contest it anyway! Besides, I know this is a will for guardianship of the girls, and Lord knows my mother wouldn’t leave me in your presence. she would never leave my sisters to you…” “why are you so horrible to your dearest father? On what grounds can you contest a will? I’ve been there for you Hais…” I laugh sarcastically, “yeah been there to borrow money… I will contest the will on the ground that my mother was probably high or mentally challenged to put you in it…” “um Good morning…” Mr. Wilson interrupts. I  stand with a smile as he leans in for a hug. “How are you keeping girl?” “Ah what must I say? I have to be strong, you know. For Harp and Harlow…” He shrugs, “I’m sorry about your loss. Please sit so we can get through this quickly then, I’m sure you have to go back to work?” I nod. “Frankie, How have you been?” He asks my dad, in which my dad changes his demeanor once again, into the grieving widow. “Oh carrying on… You know…” he wipes a fake tear, and I feel like I want to puke at all the fake-ness he is showing. Mr. Wilson nods. He opens a file. “Today, Miss Haisley Andrews, has been called out to hear the last will and testament of Mrs. Lynn Carmichael…. This will was updated, two months ago, for your information.” I nod for him to continue. “right… I, Lynn Carmichael hereby Grant custody of my two younger daughters, Harlow Lopez and Harper Lopez to their older sister Haisley Andrews, granted that the girls are still minors, and incapable to survive on their own, also granted that Haisley Andrews accepts this commitment of custody. Do you accept Haisley?” “I do Mr. Wilson, I accept full responsibility for them.” “Good, Can I continue?” “there’s more?” I question, what else could there be, beside the house. But who wants that crummy old apartment anyway… We’ve only just leased it…. “there is more child…. Can I continue?” I nod in response. “for the first Life insurance payout of three Million Dollars, It shall be paid to My Oldest daughter Haisley Andrews…” By this time my mouth fell on the floor. “For the second of one million five hundred thousand shall be paid into a trust for Harlow Lopez, upon her eighteenth birthday it shall be released to her, to do as she pleases, the same applies to Harper Lopez for the one million five hundred thousand…” My ears have gone, and I think I’m looking very damn stupid, pulling my ears, and my jaw has flown open and will not shut. He continues, “the policies for the cars… the payout of an extra three hundred thousand shall be paid to my oldest daughter Haisley Andrews, to buy reliable cars for herself and the two girls once they have gotten a valid Licence…” I think I’m hyperventilating at this point. “and an extra one million five hundred will be paid to Haisley Andrews to buy a home for her and her sisters…. The amount of two million will be paid into a trust for all three of my daughters to complete their schooling… this shall be paid into the school's account directly…” I feel tears rolling down my face, if he is joking, it’s a real sick prank. “Last but not least an amount of six Million Dollars will be paid out to Haisley Andrews. The description of that amount will be in the letter that follows. That payout, Haisley will be responsible for… Hais, are you okay?” Mr. Wilson asks, my mouth is dry so I nod. “I, Lynn Carmichael, request that I be cremated, my ashes must be scattered on the farm, Haisley Andrews my oldest daughter will find a place…” He nods and hands me a letter. “Read it when you’re ready Haisley. I think it will be better to do it alone. “Um but, um…” “yes Haisley?” “um, how?” “Your Mom was an insurance broker, a good one at that Haisley… She earned a little pension towards the end and your mom was going to receive a big pension, but she was always afraid of the day she dies, what will be left for her girls…. She paid her ass off for those life insurance policies… but hell she was determined to cover her girls. And she has been paying them for many years, she was working in the business for forty-two years, and her premiums were about five thousand dollars a month maybe even more… It all comes down to, good investments… now my girl you will be absolutely stupid to deny this will. Do you Haisley Andrews accept all written in this will?” “I do…” “I contest!” My father blurts. He looks like he just had a heart attack. “on what grounds Mr. Andrews?” “on temporary insanity! My wife had no common sense obviously… to Hand over so much money to a child!” “sir, I will contest to that, as I think Lynn was a very sensible woman. I doubt she would have done this if she didn’t know what she was doing…” “then I contest on the ground that her hand was forced!” “By whom Frankie?” Mr. Wilson is now looking at my dad as if he were deranged. “sir, I am the executor, also I was Lynn’s close friend, I remember the day she came in, and she had a lot of sense in her, she was not delusional and she came on her own accord. Besides, this had been active like this for years…. She just came in to update it. She made no changes on the payouts and to whom they go to, it was merely the dates and social security numbers she had updated…” “ But I got nothing! Nothing! That b***h left me not one dime!” He shouts, “Hey! Watch who you talking about!” I shout. “My mother was not b***h, certainly not yours!” “ Frankie, can I get someone to escort you out of the building?” “No, I can do it myself!” He stands and slams the door behind him. “I’m sorry Mr. Wilson about that…” “no child, it's not your fault… In any case, I would like to say congratulations, because I know how much you girls struggled but I know in this time of loss you don't really want the money. Your mother was a dear person…” I nod agreeing, “Money can't bring her back…” I cry almost sobbing. My mom and my sister made me feel rich without having money. It's good to know that I have no worries now because although I helped my mother during her time of need, she always provided… Even after her death, she has provided.
