Intruder:
Crap. She had caught me. Here I was supposed to be one of the best assassins in my city, and I was caught by a little girl. Okay, so she’s not little. She’s definitely a woman, but the way she’s looking at me is that of the innocence of a little girl. She doesn’t seem scared of me. Just curious. I can clearly see her looking up and down my body, taking in the little detail that the dim light will allow.
I definitely can’t leave her alive now. I had come in here to kill her and had paused at seeing her innocent face while she slept. I had even held an internal argument with why I should absolutely kill her as I was ordered, but she looked so unsullied by the world and shouldn’t be blamed for her father’s choices. I was really conflicted about murdering the innocent girl when she startled awake. I couldn’t escape in time, so I sunk into the shadows and hoped she wouldn’t notice me, but she wouldn’t let me fool her and calmly addressed me as if I was a brother playing a prank on her. Did she not smell the blood on me? Her father’s blood? The security team? For they mostly all lay dead all around her tent, though some were merely knocked unconscious from being injured. A horror story bathed in blood. She was the only one left all alone out here in the middle of the country. No one would be able to help her. I had saved her for last since I felt like she was the least deserving of death.
Her eyes were on my face. She looked curious. She didn’t call for help. She didn’t jump to conclusions. She just looked curious. My eyebrows involuntarily arched up at her first words to me.
“What are you doing in here?” I could hear that she was nervous. She should be. I was an assassin sent to kill her and her father for his sins against my boss. A life for a life, as they say. Her father killed my boss’ son and wife, so I came to kill him and his precious daughter. Had I not had that small exchange with her outside her tent I would have started with her, but she was so kind and sad that I had a hard time justifying her murder and therefore went against my orders to slay her in front of her father and just killed him first instead. No one would know.
I am supposed to be carrying out justice, but killing this innocent creature in cold blood somehow doesn’t seem just. I watched her face fill with surprise when her father spoke to her as he did, and I gathered that she did not even know her father any more. His simple words of ‘I love you’ even seemed to catch her off guard and send her deep into her memories. I could almost see the pain in her eyes, even though my back was turned to her. Imagine my surprise when she addressed me in her soft voice and bid me a goodnight. She didn’t seem like a cohort to murder.
I sized her up now that I could face her without concern. I noticed that she was clutching her sheets up to her neck, and I wondered if she was scared or cold. My heart softened toward her a little bit more.
“Well, my lady, to answer your question,” I answered slowly, “I am in here because I was hired to kill you.”
Her eyes widened at my honesty. But then they softened again. She didn’t seem disturbed.
“My father. He has done some terrible things, I guess?” She asked sadly. She was no longer looking at me. She was looking toward her feet, and I’m pretty sure she was crying by the sudden thickness in her voice.
“I am here to avenge the deaths of my boss’ infant son and beloved wife,” I declared just as I had rehearsed saying it. I had just declared this to her father a few minutes before entering here. He had already breathed his last. I regretted that my work was not considered done with him.
“Infant son?!” Her head snapped up in horror. “My father killed a CHILD?! A BABY?!” She seemed enraged and horrified. Now she was yelling. She threw the covers back and jumped to her feet. Suddenly I understood why she had been holding them up so high. The woman was completely and intoxicatingly naked. For once, I was completely caught off guard. As the best assassin, I had been trained for all the potential scenarios that I might face, but this one...it got overlooked, I guess. That or no assassin had ever come into contact with an indignant naked woman before.
One thing was certain, I was distracted. VERY distracted. She was standing there with her hands on her hips staring me down in anger that was not meant for me but for her father. CRAP. CRAP. CRAP. How was I supposed to finish this mission?! Killing her would be just as bad as her father’s killing of the infant boy.
“Ugh. I didn’t sign up for this”, I groaned out loud as I pinched the bridge of my nose and lowered my head. I can’t focus with her standing there looking at me like that. I’m only human.
“Are you serious about my father killing an innocent baby?” She whispered. The horror in her voice was replaced with shame. I was surprised to find that I wanted to take her in my arms and comfort her. I kept my eyes averted but chose to answer.
“Yeah. My boss is a mysterious man who runs a mysterious business. Your father was a business rival and he and his men cornered my boss’ wife and her baby boy while they were out shopping one day. One of the maids with her escaped after catching it on her camera. She had found a hiding place where she was able to tape the entire thing. There is no doubt that your father's men cornered and killed the woman and child in cold blood.” I looked up at her after telling the abbreviated version of the story. That was all she needed to know. Her hand was over her heart, and her eyes were pouring tears as she stared at me in wide-eyed shock. Why was this woman so beautiful? Why? I was beginning to realize that I wasn’t capable of finishing my job.
“He...did that?” She asked slowly and painfully. “That man...killed them...for money?” She seemed to be struggling to digest what I had told her. Her hand went from her heart to her mouth, covering it in grief. I felt the urge to go hug her. She looked like she needed it. My heart hurt for her. I don’t know why. I’m an assassin. I’ve killed many people. But I felt an overwhelming urge to say,
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry you had to find out this way. When there’s an assassin here to bring justice by shedding your blood.”
Her face snapped up, and she squared her shoulders as she looked at me with defiance and determination.
“Then before I die, have s*x with me," she commanded.
