CHAPTER TWO.

As I waited, i could see some of them hurriedly trying to leave while my mother walked up to me with a fake smile plastered across her face, I knew she wanted to send me back into my room. It was not like I was not familiar with what was about to happen but none of them knew. I didn’t have a chance to tell them anything yet, I was thrilled and scared. “What is happening, mother?” I managed to ask, “why is everyone leaving?” “It is a full moon Charlotte” she replied, “everyone must have something to do, we will have your ball later. Why don’t you go in and take some rest?” “But mother” I whined, “being seventeen doesn’t come twice, how am I supposed to enjoy another ball” “Do as I have said Charlotte” by now I could see she was losing her cool, “go to your room” The minute I moved one step, a loud howling voice reached my ears and I froze. It was the same thing I heard four calendar months ago which triggered what was bidding within me. The voice seemed like it was calling out to me but before i could even say anything, mother shoved me towards the governess who hastily led me away. In no time, I was locked away in my room while my modiste helped me to take my attires off. At least, I would breath well and away from the tight fitting bodice. “Why was the ball suddenly cut short, Alice” “Well” she shrugged, “like the madam said, it is a full moon” “What happens on a full moon and why did everyone become distraught when father talked about it!” I noticed Alice wasn’t particularly interested in talking about the situation but I also wanted to know what was going on. It was not like I didn’t know the kind of family I was from. “Are you scared?” I asked her and her forehead creased into a slight frown immediately. Finally she was done with my hair and my clothes, now dressed in a loose fitting night dress, I walked over to my window frame and lowered myself on it. The gust of wind on my bare face was so satisfying, I did this all the time. “Why aren’t you saying anything Alice? I asked her again, “are you scared that you might say too much?” “What do you mean, my lady?” She responded, “I don’t think i understand what you mean” My lips curled into a smile, I was just seventeen but not dumb. “What are your thoughts on shapeshifters?” I finally asked the question that had been lingering in my head and the look on Alice’s face changed drastically. “My lady, why will you even ask that kind of a question?” Alice picked up my clothes and made her way towards the cupboard, I could see her limbs shaking and I knew she wanted to be over and out of my room soon which made the smile on my lips intensify. “It is a full moon Alice, why are you still here? Aren’t you scared that you may transform and….” The clothes immediately fell out of her hand and she turned her attention towards me abruptly, her lips were twitching and I knew she was itching to say something. “How…how did you know? How…” Alice’s voice trailed off, she couldn’t believe it could she?” With a smirk on my face, I stood up from the window frame and walked over to my drawer before throwing it open, a book was lying alone in it and I gently picked it up. “It was twenty four calendars months ago Alice” I began, “that night when mother and father went for that ball that they had to stay for a week, remember?” She nodded her head and I smiled, “I had slept in mother’s room that night and something awoke me in the middle of my sleep, being so curious i jumped out through her window that is connected to the woods and there and then, I saw a group of people i know turn into things I didn’t know by then. Curious to know what was happening, I secretly followed them and was able to find mother and father, but up to this day none of them knew. I ran back home and rushed into the library, the rest is history” “So why didn’t you say something? Everyone was scared that you may not be able to take the truth when you know it, my lady. Everyone has been scared of saying anything to you” “But why?” I suddenly snapped, “don’t I have the right to know? Why would it come as a surprise to me when that is who I am?” Alice heaved a sigh as she walked back to me, I could see fear and sadness in her eyes. Was there something else I didn’t know about?” “We are nothing but a weak group of werewolves my lady, we are not that significant” Her statement made my forehead crease into a frown. “What do you mean?” “It seems I will be the one to tell you everything” after that, Alice held my hand and led me towards the bed before she also lowered herself on it. “Look here my lady, the generations of Hawkings before you were all shapeshifters and have been leading the pack for years unending until your father became an alpha after defeating his father. Things were going smoothly for the pack and everyone was happy but the unexpected happened” “What happened?” I asked in haste, I could feel the excitement surging through my veins. The fact that I was not a normal human excited and made me scared at the same time. We are in a world where anything was possible and werewolves in this time and era were not even a new thing. Everyone looked normal by day and became what they wanted by night. “A primordial arrived” I could see the fear in her eyes as she talked. “Who is a primordial?” “Look my lady” Alice held onto my hand like a child, “now that you know who you are, they will be coming for you. Your wolf instincts will be revived and everyone will know that the omega of the nightshade pack has come. Your mate…..” her voice trailed off when my door opened with a huge thud and my mother sauntered into the room, she didn’t look pleased. “Away with you, Alice” she snarled. “Yes madam” Alice bowed and I watched her walk out of the room with my mother’s eyes fixated on me. It felt like she was angry about something but I couldn’t place it. “Is everything alright?” “Since you already know who you are, I don’t think there is a reason to hide it from you right?” “Why didn’t you tell me mother? Why did I have to find out for myself?” “We live in an elite society Charlotte” she began, “not all members of the Ton are our kind, not all of them are our friends. Your father was made the lord of the lower court by the king, do you think everyone is happy about that? What more, what do you think the king will do when he finds out that we are not what we portray to be?” “Then what should I do then? It is not like I want to cause trouble for you and father. “Your father and I are weak now Charlotte and in no time, your fated mate will come to find you. Until then, do not cause any trouble” “But Alice just told me our pack is weak” “Weak not dead, Charlotte. Your father is nothing but a pawn in his hand and I fear that he may take you away even before we can do anything about it” “Who may take me away, mother?” I inquired while standing up from the bed, “who are you scared of?” “That bronze necklace is our family heirloom, always keep it with you. We don’t know what will happen after that” “What exactly is going on mother, why aren’t you telling me everything? What are you hiding?” “Why don’t you learn how to wolf out first and we can talk more. You turned out to be an omega which is a shock to me but who can question the moon goddess?” Without saying anything again, mother made her way out of the room leaving me more confused than I should. She was talking about a certain person and I had a feeling that this person was to be feared. Heaving a sigh, I walked back to my bed and picked up the book I was reading before but my mind was not settled. I had a feeling that tomorrow was going to be much more than today. My birthday came with a lot of things and I was sure of one thing, I had many more to come.
