Chapter 20, Eye’ler Perdition:
The fires still burned along the water’s edge of Perdition. After the first and only wave of attacks rained death upon the city, the few remaining forces of the city mustered at the stone building that was once the customs house. These guards were normally tasked with keeping the drunks in line. Under cover of darkness, before Minor and Major had risen about the horizon, the men discussed the plan.
After the black ships pummeled the shore, the majority of them pulled back. They had left a half dozen craft guarding the mouth of the bay. Too far out to sea for the city’s defenses to reach them yet close enough to strike any counterattack with impunity.
Eye’ler watched the sunset. He was a junior member of the guard, who happened to survive the first barrage
