The Forbidden Mate

Ch.8--The Escape

Ember POV:

I wasn’t sure who was coming so I turned off my phone and hid it in the drawer. I could hear the locks turning slowly, like someone was trying to be quiet about it. As the door opened, I seen Damion come in. I could see the anger in his eyes when he looked at me. At first, I wasn’t sure if he was angry at me or something else. “I can’t believe Alpha Niko did this to you,” he said shaking his head. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding. “Look, you have to run…now. And don’t stop. I just got word that you are going to be moved to the cells and a trial and execution will be held in a week. You have been labeled as a traitor to the pack and a threat to all. I can’t let that happen. Right now, everyone is at the pack house. I’m supposed to be guarding your room. This is your only chance Ember, go please.”

I sat in silence. My dad was going to execute me. I couldn’t believe it. I was going to die because my dad didn’t approve of my mate. The mate the moon goddess herself made for me. Then I realized how much danger Damion would be in if I actually ran. He was the only friend I have ever really had. He was more than that…he was my brother.

“Damion, he will kill you! I can’t do that!” He simply smiled at me as he pulled me in for a hug. “Ember, I’m coming with you. I know you aren’t safe here and I’m not sure you are safe with Alpha Gage either. But if Alpha Gage is your mate then I don’t think he would hurt you, not like your dad has planned anyways. And I’m not stupid…I know Alpha Niko will kill me the first chance he gets, but it’s worth the risk. You are like my little sister. I will either die by Alpha Niko or I will run with you and die from Alpha Gage, but I will at least make sure you are safe. I vowed a long time ago to keep you safe and that’s what I’m going to do.” He bowed his head at me. I wanted to cry, but I would not let Gage kill him. He’s helping me escape so Gage should be thankful to him. I knew our time for escaping was limited so I slid on my shoes and ran out the door with Damion.

Damion led us safely to the woods and we quickly shifted to our wolves. We took the long way to Crescent Moon Pack to avoid town and the risk of being spotted by someone from our pack. As we came to the edge of Crescent territory there were at least 100 wolves waiting at the border. They all started growling at Damion and me. Damion instinctively put himself in front of me to protect me. I shifted back and so did the largest wolf there. He walked toward me hesitantly. “What is a she-wolf from Blood Moon doing out this late and coming to Crescent Moon?” He had power; it was rolling off him although I wasn’t affected by it. I lowered my head to show respect and to let him know I didn’t want any trouble. “I’m Ember, Alpha Gage’s mate. Please help me and my guard.” As soon as I said that the man went to one knee showing his neck to me, “I am so sorry Luna, I didn’t know it was you. I’m DeAngelo, Beta of Crescent Moon. Alpha Gage will be here shortly, we were just getting ready to come save you.”

I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. Just then all the wolves begin to bow, and I seen Gage coming through the crowd. As soon as he saw me, he growled and raced toward me. He stood blocking me from everyone’s view. At first, I thought he didn’t want me there, but I quickly realized it was because I had shown up in wolf form and changed back to speak to DeAngelo, I didn’t have any clothes on. I hadn’t even thought of that at the time, all I could think of was getting help for me and Damion, getting somewhere safe. By now Alpha Niko would have realized we had left and I’m sure he had men tracking us already.

I shifted back to wolf form and that’s when it happened. It felt like electricity coursing through me. Gage had mind linked with me.

Ember, who is this with you? Can he be trusted?

All I could do was nod at Gage.

Follow me darlin’. Let’s get you home.

Gage stood up straight with his head high. He mind linked everyone, even me again. As he turned around all the wolves bowed down again. Everyone please look at the wolf standing next to me. She is my mate, Crescent Moon Luna. She is in danger! Alpha Niko wants her. Start patrols now! No one crosses our border. DeAngelo you are in charge of security for the night.

Gage turned to look at me and started walking through the crowd. All the wolves kept their heads down as we walked past them with Damion following close behind. I had never been to Crescent Moon Territory before and it was beautiful. Although I couldn't see everything with great detail because it was so dark, I could already tell I was going to love it here. We walked up to a Victorian style mansion and Gage shifted back. I want your friend to wait in the living room and you can follow me upstairs. I will give you some clothes to put on.

We followed him inside the house. Gage instructed Damion to wait in the living room. I could tell Damion didn’t want to, but he followed Gage’s order. Once upstairs Gage laid out one of his solid black t-shirts on the bed for me. “Darlin’ I’m going to wait outside the door. When you are done let me know.” As soon as he walked out of the room I shifted back and slipped on his shirt. It was way too big for me and hung down to my knees. I guess that was good considering I had no clothes of my own to put on. I opened the bedroom door and Gage was right there like he said he would be. He pulled me into his chest and hugged me tightly. I couldn’t help wrapping my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist, clinging to him for dear life. He held me like I weighed nothing, I had never felt so safe before. After several minutes I finally leaned away from him, and he sat me down. I explained to him that Niko was planning to execute me, and Damion rescued me. “Gage, can Damion please join your pack? He saved me and now he will have a target on his back. He’s my best friend, I can’t let him die for me. He can’t be murdered for going against Alpha Niko.”
