A huge ceremony was held quickly to celebrate my new position. I smiled and shook hands with people I had protected in the past and never had to associate with, people I had never wanted to be in the company of. I was a street-level police officer, the same as Bob, and have never felt comfortable hobnobbing and having people try to crawl up my ar..s. Yeah, you get the picture.
I took over Bob's office, trying to take in what was there: some half-finished work and memos on things he wanted to keep an eye on, all under the lock and key that Pam gave me. I visited Bob while he was still out cold. She had heard the news of my appointment and kept the keys on her, hoping I could pop in. She was only too glad to hand them over, as they had been burning a hole in her purse.
