7 | done and dusted
The driver pulled out an envelope and handed it over to me. “This is from Mr. Le Doux,” he said.
It was probably a letter or the cash I was expecting to get but why couldn’t he simply give it to me?
“Thank you,” I repeated before taking the envelope and then leaving the car.
I rubbed the back of my neck and shivered underneath the cold as the car took off. Something was wrong…terribly wrong. On the street itself, I opened the envelope and found a handsome amount of money inside. A smile formed on my lips as I excitedly rushed into my apartment. This was what all I ever needed. It was more than what I needed…a lot more.
After counting the money, I pulled out the piece of paper that was hiding inside the envelope.
Thank you, Charlotte. Last night was great for me. Here is your reward. Take care and I shall see you soon.
Marcus Le Doux
Well, something went well. I placed aside the envelope and limped back to my room. My insides were aching but more than that, my neck was throbbing with immense pain. I quickly rushed into my washroom and looked at myself in the mirror.
“f**k,” I groaned as I touched the love bite Marcus placed on my neck. Great, now I had to cover it up. There was a strange purplish mark running down my neck, apart from that, I didn’t have any other marks.
After freshening up and taking a few pain killers, I called my father.
“Good morning,” I said.
“Good morning to you too as well. Did you sleep well?” he asked with concern.
“Yes, I had a good night.” I replied with a cheerful smile. “Anyways, I will be coming to the hospital. I got the money we needed so I will be making the p*****t for the surgery and everything else that is required.” I added.
“Oh, really? How? That’s amazing, Charlotte!” my father exclaimed with happiness.
“Yes, a friend gave me, and she asked me to return whenever I had the money, no pressure.” I lied. I couldn’t tell my father that I had s*x with a well-known person named Marcus Le Doux. His eyeballs would pop out.
“That’s wonderful! Don’t you have work though?” he asked.
“Yes, I do have work but it’s starting at 11AM so I have enough time to come to the hospital, see my mother and spend some time with you.” I said while looking at the clock. I really needed to take some off’s now.
“Okay, love, come then. I will be waiting for you, and your mother is doing better compared to yesterday.” He added.
“That’s great! I will be there in a bit,”
After the conversation, I cleaned up the house and then left for the hospital. Just before leaving, I wrapped a scarf around my neck to hide the hickey I got from Marcus. My father couldn’t suspect anything.
I cleared my mind before entering the hospital. There were a lot of questions that were unanswered. A tumble of confusion continued to grow inside me head. Everything in my life was different now. I wasn’t a virgin anymore and I had s*x with someone for money. My mother was in coma and my father was here with after years.
“How is she?” I asked my father as I walked into the hospital. I found him sitting outside by the reception. He was probably waiting for me.
“She's doing better. What about you? Are you okay?” He asked before placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.
I flinched upon his touch. “Yeah, I'm good.”
“How are your night?” He asked. “And what about the money?”
“Everything is going to be okay. I'm going to make the p*****t now,” I said before going to the reception and asking the receptionist for the amount that needed to paid for the surgery and the chemotherapy.
Once I got the exact amount, I wrote a check as I deposited everything into my bank account. After the confirmation of the p*****t, my mother was moved into a different room, a much better and spacious room. The treatment began immediately and the doctors contacted me for the surgery.
They advised to wait for a couple days before starting the surgery. A few more tests needed to be done before my mother could go for surgery. I agreed and went along with whatever the doctors said. When everything was cleared out, I left the hospital and went for work.
My father covered up for me and stayed behind as he had nothing to do. However, he had to go back to his house tonight so I needed to stay at the hospital for the night.
My parents never remarried after the divorce. The separation initially happened due to them fighting all the time — for money. It was the root of all the problems in my life. I was relieved when my bank account still looked good after clearing the hospital payments.
I could survive with that amount for months and I didn't even have to do anything.
“Lola,” Rose ran behind me as I walked towards the HQ of Le Doux Corps. I stopped and turned around to see my high-school friend, Rose.
“Oh my god,” I screamed before rushing towards her and hugging her tightly. It had been a long time. “I missed you. When did you come back to England?” I asked as I pulled away.
“Just a few days ago. I tried to contact you but your old numbers weren't working. I knew where you worked at so I decided to show up here.” She explained. “How is everything?”
“Oh…” there was a moment of silence between us before I continued. “My mother is sick again and she's hospitalized,”
“What?!” Worry spread across her face as she exclaimed.
“Yes, the doctors say that she got lung cancer again. She will be having a surgery in a few days so I hoping she will get better after that.” I said.
“When did this all happen?”
“Just two days ago,”
“I'm so sorry. I will pray for your mother’s help. If you need anything, I'm here okay?” She said as she rubbed my shoulder.
“I know, thank you and it's great having you back. I had missed you. How was your trip to France anyways?” I asked while changing the topic. Talking about my mother broke my heart into pieces all over again.
“It was good! Tell me about yourself, Lola. What have you been doing lately? Still stuck with Mr. Chicken?” She asked.
I laughed out loudly as she called Mr. Jordan, Mr. Chicken. It was the nickname Rose gave him when she learned that he used to eat fried chicken almost every single day.
“He's not Mr. Chicken anymore but work has been good,” it was a lot better since last night. There was a new thrill, a new desire burning inside me. “I have to work. My shift is starting soon and Mr. Jordan will murder me if I don't show up on time. Could we catch up later?” I asked.
“Of course! Which hospital is your mother in? I'll pay her a visit,” she asked.
“Mereview Hospital. My father is around there as well and as soon as I'm done with work, I'll be going there.” I explained.
“Oh, then we can meet up later and go together?”
“Of course,” I replied. “I'll see you later and I will text you with my new number,” I quickly said before waving Rose a goodbye.
“Goodbye, Lola!” She waved her hand through the air before walking away from the street.
Rose loved calling me Lola. It was a nickname she gave me. She hated saying my full name. I admit, Lola was a nice name and it sounded wonderful as well.
“Ms. Charlotte!” Mr. Jordan folded his hands across his chest and stood in front of me. “Again late. Is there something wrong?” He asked.
After a moment of hesitation, I spilled the truth as I needed some time off from work. I couldn't concentrate knowing that my mother was in the hospital and here I was, making money.
I explained everything to Mr. Jordan and told him about my mother and her health condition.
“Why didn't you tell me earlier?” He asked as he rubbed the back of his head.
I shrugged it off simply.
“That's why you've been running late?” Mr. Jordan asked and I nodded my head. “Well, seeing your circumstances, I understand. You can take a couple weeks off if you'd like and don't be pressurized to work here. It's completely okay. Take care of yourself and your mother.” There was sorrow in his voice.
“Thank you, Mr. Jorden.”
“Don't thank me. And next time, tell me if there is an emergency. I had been so harsh with you for the past couple days so I apologize for that.” He said sincerely.
I smiled at him and replied, “It's okay.”
“Now run along, go to your mother and don't bother coming here until she's fine. You'll get your monthly pay either way.” He assured while flickering his hands in the air.
I grabbed my bag from the desk and stood up. “Thank you for understanding,” I said before walking out of the door.
A wild thought ran across my mind before I could leave the building. I couldn't just leave like that. He was in here. Marcus was inside the building and there were many things I needed to talk about.
Many things.
