Mom and I are walking together outside on the packhouse grounds. The party seems to have just started here and there are cheerful people everywhere. Some are standing together in groups talking, while others are slowly grooving to the sound of the slow music playing from the right side.
While I’m walking beside Mom, I sweep my eyes all across the compound and I can see crowds of people stretching out all the way to the tree line at the edge of our packhouse compound.
Wow, there are so many people here. It must be because Red Moon pack is one of the biggest packs this side of the kingdom. I don’t even recognize most people here.
They are guests from other packs who have come to witness the crowning of our new Alpha. All the other packs always like to stay appraised about what happens in our pack and that’s why so many of their members are present here to witness this momentous occasion.
While I’m admiring the sight, a cool breeze sweeps across the compound onto my face, chilling my skin and making me touch my cheeks just to warm them up a little.
I look up and see the brilliant full moon in the sky above us and it immediately reminds me… I have to try reaching out to my wolf again and see if she can be released tonight.
I would ask Mom to help me out but she always makes a small deal out of it. I know if I ask her right now, she’ll just start telling me about how not a big deal being wolfless is, and how so many people don’t always get their wolves early and they end up getting them later. I have heard that speech a million times.
I know she means well, but I think she just doesn’t get it. She has no idea how much I am dying to find the love of my life, and I can't do that without my wolf, I wouldn’t know them if they passed right in front of me.
Which is why I have to try and reach out by myself. Good thing Mom already showed me how, so right now I just need to ditch her and find a nice quiet place under the moonlight by myself while this party continues.
“See, it’s nice out here isn’t it?” Mom says and I look at her. She meets me with a gentle smile.
“Yeah, it’s not so bad,” I say and smile back, and the two of us keep walking towards the place where the party is being held.
While we approach closer, I look up ahead and see the tent where the officials are seated at the edge of the compound. The place is raised from the ground slightly and beautifully decorated with flowers and hanging lights such that everyone can see them clearly from anywhere down here on the compound.
“Let’s have some fun then sweetie, tonight is about us just letting loose,” Mom says, looking at me, making me chuckle slightly.
“Hmmm, I thought tonight was about Simon becoming Alpha,” I say with a funny voice and send her a smile.
“Oh... that too,” she says, and we both giggle.
Just as we are enjoying the moment, Mom gets called on by one of her friends. We both turn around and I see the group of ladies standing together that are calling her, and that’s when I see my window of opportunity.
“Mom, go have fun with your friends… I’ll be okay,” I tell her.
“Are you sure?” she says.
“Yes, I can take care of myself,” I tell her.
“Okay, and don’t take anyone’s bs okay?… you are amazing just the way you are Cassie, and I love you,” she says, making me smile.
“I love you too Mom.”
She gives me slight peck on my forehead and then goes on to join the group of ladies and start chatting with them.
I turn around from them and keep walking in between the crowds of people that are scattered everywhere here. There is so much commotion at the center here so I decide to walk towards the tree line on the edge of the compound so that I can find a quiet place there and try to summon my wolf.
Oh golly, I’m getting all excited already. I’ll be so happy when she comes.
Walking further, I come up to a massive bonfire that is burning towards the edge of the party. I didn’t even know there was a bonfire tonight, we always have them whenever something is happening here at the packhouse.
I find a few people dancing to the music beside the massive rattling fire. Just then, I suddenly hear a familiar voice that stings me like daggers to my heart.
“Hey wolfless,”
I don’t even turn around, I already know whose voice that is. It’s that b***h Becky. God I hate her. She was homecoming Queen and she is always so full of herself it makes me nauseated. Also, she is like the chairlady of my haters in this packhouse.
“You know, if you didn’t want to be born a werewolf you could have just said so… what the hell are you even doing at this party, wolfless trash like you shouldn’t be allowed amongst our kind…” she continues yapping her mouth behind me.
I still don’t turn to look at her. I just keep walking forward towards the other side because I know if I stop and look at her, I'll probably strangle her right here. I don’t want that, and she isn’t even worth my attention, so I just keep my composure and continue walking.
I see a waiter carrying a tray of champagne glasses in front of me and so I hurry up towards him. I need a drink.
“Hey wait,” I call, and he stops in front of me.
I take one of the glasses from his tray and he nods his head politely before walking away. While taking a sip from the wine glass, I turn around and see that Becky didn’t really follow me. That’s what I thought.
It’s like she just thrives on making me feel terrible, and apparently the only way to treat her bitchy attitude is to just ignore her like she never existed, and she just goes away. Good to know.
I now stand at the very edge of the party near the tree line of our packhouse. The huge bonfire is a few paces on my right side and I can see everyone else here having the time of their lives.
But I’m not. I feel incomplete without my wolf. I have for a while. If only I could be just like everyone else, I bet all my troubles would just vanish, and my life wouldn’t be such a nightmare.
I take another sip from the glass in my hand and then I start doing what Mom showed me. I close my eyes and search my mind. Mom said the wolf connection happens through the mind and that just by closing my eyes, I should be able to sense my wolf.
The strange thing is, I don’t feel anything.
“Wolfie, are you there?” I think to myself, with my eyes closed. I wait for a moment and there is still nothing. Just darkness and nothing.
Oh come on.
I open my eyes to take another sip from the glass, and just as I do, I see something that completely distracts me from what I was doing.
I see the Royal entourage. There is always a representative from the Royal Castle send to officiate Alpha ceremonies like this one, but you won’t believe who it is that came for this one tonight.
It’s Prince Damian, heir to the throne of Soaria. He is actually here in person. Just landing my gaze on him immediately puts a silly smile on my face.
He is standing with a group of people a few paces beside the huge bonfire, that is not far from where I’m standing. Most of the people he is standing with are wearing royal uniforms, which means they must be his guards or part of his protective detail.
I see him laughing and talking with his friends as they watch they huge burning fire. His sight gives me the warmest feeling in my body, and I just can’t help myself, I don’t even know why but I start walking slowly towards them.
I’ve had the craziest crush on our Prince ever since I saw him when he visited our high school several times. I mean, who hasn't. Looking at him just standing there with those chiseled muscles and those gorgeous brown eyes just gets me all worked up. Goddamn. He is hot as hot. I could swoon.
He is like that one thing I could do anything to have, but I know I could never really have. God he is dreamy... I would let him do whatever he wanted with me.
I get so lost in my intoxication over him that I totally forget I am still walking towards them. I don’t realize it till its too late, and the Prince suddenly looks at me.
We lock eyes for a split second, and in that moment, I feel something I have never felt before. I feel like a fire of desire for him just suddenly explodes in my body, sending a wave of electricity across every part of me and leaving me helpless in the mercy of his eyes.
Wow, what the hell was that?
I quickly gather myself together, and that’s when I remember it’s considered rude for anyone to look directly into the eyes of a Royal without being spoken to.
As soon as that thought hits me, I quickly turn around and look away from him. I walk fast into the crowd of people here hoping to just disappear so that I don’t get in trouble for doing what I just did.
As I’m walking fast away from them, my heart is beating like drums in my chest. What in the world just happened back there?
