KATE
For a moment, time seemed to stand still as I gazed into Luca Kincaid's mesmerizing eyes, my heart pounding hard in my chest.
The new Alpha stood before me, tall and commanding, his presence filling the space with an aura of power and authority. Apart from his eyes and delicious looking mouth, every other part of his face was covered with the black mask he had on.
“Apologies for barging into what was previously your hideout, I’m afraid I needed a minute away from all that raucous.” He apologized with a sheepish grin.
His words snapped me right into action, unfreezing my mind and my tongue, which had previously been stuck to the roof of my mouth as I stood there, shocked at his totally unexpected presence. “Oh, by all means, feel free to stay, Alpha… this is your house after all.” I chuckled, trying to brush past him so I could head home.
The night had already gone way better than I expected, and I knew without a doubt that I would dream of it for months to come, but the Alpha was apparently not done with me yet.
“Stay…” He held onto my arm, his head c****d to the right, “What is your name?”
“Kate. Katherina.”
I was trying so hard not to swoon from what I was convinced were sparks flowing from where our bodies touched.
“Stay, Katherina. I could use your company.” He repeated the words, snapping me from my thoughts once more.
I nodded graciously and walked back to the balcony railings, where I’d been standing, and Alpha Kincaid joined me too.
For a while, we just stood there in comfortable silence, our hearts beating in a synchronized harmony, but I just had to break the silence.
The fates hadn’t given me this opportunity just to waste it in total silence.
“The entire pack celebrates you today, and yet here you are, running away from it all. Why is that?” I asked softly.
He was silent for a while, processing my question, and then finally, he said, “I don’t know, but this… this isn’t what I wanted, Katherina. Being an Alpha, all the cheers, the smiles, the compliments and the pledges of allegiance… I want nothing to do with it. You see, people are snakes, hiding behind masks of angels and pretending to love one completely… but everywhere I look, I see enemies.” He said, taking off the mask in frustration, and revealing his beauty in all of its entirety to me and making me stare at him in awe.
“Tonight was just supposed to be a simple celebration among the pack, among family, and yet my father has turned it into a worldwide banquet, inviting all the friends and foes we cannot even distinguish between.”
I looked up at him, suddenly feeling a surge of confidence that was unlike any I had ever felt. “How do you know I am not one of those foes?”
He smiled, a twinkle of amusement dancing in his eyes. “I don’t.” He admitted easily, “Heck, for all I know, you are one of those foes, and yet… something, I don’t really know what it is, but something tells me I can trust you.”
I felt a flush of warmth spread through me at his words, a rush of adrenaline coursing through my veins.
It was not every day that one met the object of their desires only for him to tell them that he trusted them after all, and something about the knowledge of knowing that he trusted me even though we had just officially met had me feeling over the roof.
“And you? What are you doing here, Katherina? Why are you up here on the terrace when there’s a rave going on downstairs?” He shot the question at me.
I hesitated for a moment, suddenly unsure of just how much to reveal to the Alpha of my dreams who now stood before me.
I mean, think about it,
What if he saw who I was and suddenly became closed off just like everyone else in the pack had?
What if even worse, he had me punished for attending an event I had not been invited to?
That confidence from earlier still burned hot in my blood, it seemed, for suddenly, I was saying, “I suppose you could say that I too wanted to experience something different,” I admitted softly, my words carefully chosen as I stared into the night. “To for once escape the mess and the pathetic nature of my everyday life and step into the world of the elite and the glamourous, even if it was only for a night.”
A ghost of a smile played across his lips as he took a step closer, his gaze never leaving mine.
In his eyes, there was a flicker of understanding as he pondered over my confession, a hint of empathy that warmed my heart etched on his face, one that revealed to me that he very well understood my plight.
“I understand the feeling all too well, Katherina,” He confessed too, “Sometimes, we all need a bit of a break from the burdens of our reality.”
“I guess that would explain why you’re out here staring into the night like a mere commoner when you literally have a party being thrown in your honor.” I shot at him teasingly.
We both chuckled in amusement.
“You know, being out here doesn’t mean that I still can’t have fun,” He said mischievously, stretching forth his hand, “May I have this dance, Kate?”
Now, surely, this was a dream, right?
This was the part where I woke up with a start, my heart hammering in my chest while my stomach clenched in longing and disappointment, right?
But this was no dream.
It was all real.
Luca Kincaid, the Alpha of our pack, was standing before me, extending his hand, inviting me to dance with him under the moonlit sky.
My heart soared with a mix of exhilaration and disbelief.
The night just kept getting better and better!
With trembling fingers, I reached out and placed my hand in his, the feeling of warmth in his touch sending shivers down my spine.
Without a word, he pulled me gently into his embrace, guiding me with effortless grace as we swayed to the music drifting up from the celebration below.
I let out a soft contented sigh as I slowly leaned into him, immersing myself in the moment.
Tonight was certainly a night I was never going to forget.
For a while, we danced in complete, but peaceful silence, our hearts beating as one.
But then the Alpha broke it.
“Are you from here?” His piercing brown eyes gazed at me curiously, intently as we moved.
“What do you think?” I threw at him, equally curious and wanting to know exactly what he knew about me so far.
“I can’t pick up a scent, so I’m frankly not sure, but you are certainly a familiar, else my wolf, Baelor, would have finished you off before I could have said my first word to you. So who are you really, Katherina?”
“I don’t really think who I am matters, Alpha Kincaid,” I shrugged, “After all, when tonight passes, the possibility of us ever crossing paths again is lower than zero, so I don’t think any introductions are necessary.”
I hated the fact that there was a little bitterness in my tone, but it couldn’t really be helped.
“Why do you say that?” His brow furrowed slightly, his piercing gaze boring holes into mine.
“Let's just say... I don't exactly move in the same circles as the Alpha of the pack,” I replied evasively, hoping he would take the hint without prying further.
“I see.” He said softly.
At first, I relaxed, hoping that he had bought my explanation and decided not to ask any further questions, but rather than curb his curiosity like I had expected it to, it only made things worse.
“Take off your mask, Kate.” He said lowly, huskily, his voice filled with the power of the Alpha aura.
The bastard.
He knew I would not be able to refuse his command with it.
I pulled away from him, and slowly, tentatively reached for the mask, a part of me bummed that my special night had finally come to an end, the rest of me actually relieved that it had.
It was better this way.
Lest I got any special ideas in my head.
As I hesitantly removed the mask, I could feel the Alpha's intense gaze boring into me, stripping away all the layers of protection the little plastic cover had given me. The cool night air brushed against my bare face, sending slight shivers down my spine.
And then finally, we were face to face.
Well, face to chin if I was being really honest, but you get my drift.
For a moment, there was silence as Alpha Luca stared at me, his expression unreadable.
But then, a flicker of recognition crossed his features, and he spoke in a low, almost amazed tone.
“I know you,” He said softly, his voice wafting into the cool night, “They call you...”
But his words trailed off, and I could see the hesitation in his eyes, the unspoken words right on the tip of his tongue, but never making it out into the open.
“They call me what, Alpha Kincaid? The Pack Rat? Mudblood? The lowly slave?” I demanded, my voice tinged with bitterness. “Afraid to say it?”
His jaw clenched, and I could see the anguish in his gaze as he struggled to find the right words.
I didn’t even give him the chance to formulate them, I just went off, unleashing a torrent of pent-up frustration and anger.
“You’re just like all of them, aren’t you? Tell me, what crime have I committed to be treated like this by everyone? Is it the fact that I have no parents to call my own to defend me? Or the fact that I was born wolfless? Now, what kind of Alpha are you going to be if you can't even stand up for someone who's being treated unfairly?” I demanded, my voice rising with each word, too far gone in my anger and bitterness to realise that I was talking to someone of higher rank and needed to accord him that same amount of respect when talking to him.
Alpha Kincaid's expression darkened with anger at my accusations, his jaw tightening with tension. “You know nothing about me to assume to have any idea what Alpha I would be, Katherina. I only saw how you were being treated badly once, and that glimpse alone was enough to have me taking your plight to my father, who assured me that it would be handled. And it was.” He fumed,
“That brief respite you endured after you broke my mother’s china, who do you think made it happen? I went for my international studies knowing you were safe, and I had expected to meet the same fate for you when I got back. I thought that everything you were going through had ended,” His jaw clenched even harder than before, “Clearly, it hasn’t.”
“Now that I know the truth, Katherina, I will handle it. You have my word. No one will harm you again, not even your foster family.” He vowed to me seriously,
My heart pounded in my chest as his words sank in, disbelief and a little fear coursing through me as I tried to figure out what he was trying to say.
“What…what do you mean?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Anyone who dares to mistreat you again will have no choice but to answer to me, Katherina,” He declared stoically, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Because you are moving into the Pack house with me.”
Wait, what?
