D’Arlan crawled closer and whispered to Teuns. Teuns slithered behind the few men to the left of him and repeated D’Arlan’s order. And then he found himself on the left flank, shaking. He felt so alone there. D’Arlan whispered the same order to Jack Ritchie and the Englishman did the same as Teuns until he was on the right flank. Like a single man, the ten men rose to their feet and ran bent over to the thin rim of the bowl, with D’Arlan in the middle. Just as Teuns stumbled over the thin crest of the rim of the bowl, there was a loud whispering sound to his right and then, as if by magic, everything was brightly lit, as if the sun had suddenly risen. D’Arlan had fired a flare. It made a long silver arc through the dark night and with its light conquered a tiny spot in the dark. Befor
