GLOSSARY
These are a few commonly used terms in the book:
Auw: to want
Baan Suay: properly called Baan Suay, ‘Beautiful Vil age’, Lek’s home village in northern Thailand
Baht: Thai currency: 1 Baht = 2p or 3c, but also 15.2 grammes of gold
Baht Bus: most common form of transport – a covered pick-up with bench seats, now 5 Baht for Thais and 10 Baht for foreigners
Beer Chang: Thailand’s most popular beer – 6.4 % ABV
Daddy’s Hobby: bar in Pattaya where Lek works
Dam: the colour black
Deng: the colour red
Falang: properly ‘farang’, white foreigners, Caucasians. Confusingly ‘man falang’ means crisps (potato chips). It comes from the name given to the first white foreigners in Thailand, the French or ‘Falangset’ (‘Farangset’).
