I quickly threw on some jeans and my favorite tank that said, "Blink if you want me." Grabbing an apple for breakfast I ran out to my car, eager to see the results from tryouts.
As soon as I made it to school, I took off running for the bulletin board. Of course, there was already a crowd gathered in front of it, and several girls where turning and running with tear stained faces. I was also the recipient of multiple glares which I just shrugged off. Not like it was anything new.
When I finally made it to the list, I was way too nervous to look, so I just stood there looking like an i***t. Every time I would try to turn to look at it, I would chicken out. It took several tries and a handful of minutes before I finally managed to gather enough courage to look.
My eyes immediately zeroed in on my name at the bottom, and my hand flew to mouth in an attempt to cover the embarrassing squeal that was threatening to escape. It was a pointless attempt because a few seconds later I was jumping up and down screaming like I had just won the lottery. Everybody was staring at me with horrified expressions like they could not believe that I was reacting like this.
I didn't care though; I was way too excited. It took me awhile to calm myself down enough to be able to walk to class without looking like I was on a sugar high. I was in such a good mood that nothing was bringing me down. Not the glares I was still receiving, not the attempts at tripping me, and definitely not the play-doh that was placed on my locker dial.
By the time lunch rolled around I had finally calmed down enough to catch the latest gossip. Apparently, there were four new students, three guys and a girl. Everybody was talking about how extremely good looking they all were. Their names were Sol, Anna, Herman, and Deon. From what I've been able to piece together they were like their own clique. They'd started this morning and had yet to speak to anyone. They walked around with an air of superiority like they were untouchable, and they knew it.
Anna was said to be the most gorgeous female ever to attend Olympus High. The guys were practically walking hard ons when her name was mentioned. It was actually a bit pathetic, but then again who am I to criticize. It’s not like I have so much as made one friend in this place.
All the girls were fawning over the guys. It was all they could talk about. The only thing that was leaving their mouths. Going by the girl’s opinions from the table behind me they were some fine pieces of man candy, but one stood out from the group.
Sol was rumored to be the most gorgeous man on earth. They were all saying that his looks were god like, and there wasn't one thing they could find wrong with his appearance. Not one single flaw. Personally, I had yet to meet somebody of that caliber and I highly doubted that any one person could be that gorgeous. It just wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the population.
I had yet to meet them face to face, but I would imagine that if the school was in this big of a tizzy over them the rumors must either close to true or so completely off the wall that they were feeding off each other.
Finishing my lunch, I dumped it in the trash and made my way out. I was just walking minding my own business when all of a sudden, I ran into a wall. Or what felt like a wall but turned out to be a person. In my shock it took me a moment to realize that I was slowly being drenched with a freezing cold liquid. It landed on my head soaking my hair, then ran down my back. Whatever the liquid was it was super sticky, and I was afraid that it would ruin my hair and force me to cut it.
I angrily started to look up at the perpetrator, but quickly got sidetracked by what I was seeing. Dragging my eyes up his body I couldn't help noticing how muscular he was. His shirt was just tight enough that I could make out the outlines of his eight pack and his bulging bicep muscles. His face was the picture of perfection. He had a strong defined jaw with high cheek bones and ice blue eyes that were surrounded by thick black lashes that matched the pitch-black hair on his head. A piece of his hair swept into his eyes and I had the irrational urge to sweep it aside for him.
Which only added to my confusion. Why on earth would I want to do that to a complete stranger?
It was after that thought that I finally tuned into my surroundings. The room was eerily quiet, and I noticed three people flanking the guy who I could only guess to be Sol. The other two guys were looking at me curiously and the girl wore a giddy expression. Judging by the way she couldn’t stop fidgeting or stand in one place, she was uber excited about something.
I turned my gaze back to Sol and found him glaring at me. With how I had been treated thus far at this school, I automatically went on the defense. My curious looks turned into a glacier glare that rivaled the one I was on the receiving end of currently.
"Is there a reason you are glaring at me right now?" His voice was the sweetest I could ever imagine a human owning. It was the single most comforting sound I had ever heard, even though it was said with pure malice.
It took me a few seconds to come out of my stupor and respond. "I'm glaring at you because you were glaring at me first."
"Did it ever occur to you that I was glaring at you because you ran into me and caused me to drop my lunch?" He sneered.
"It was an accident. Did you think I would purposely run into you and dowse myself in liquid?" I defend.
A smirk was slowly starting to appear as he answered. "It wouldn't be the weirdest thing a person did to get my attention."
I scoffed, "full of yourself much?"
"This coming from the girl who blatantly checked me out for several minutes, but no I'm not full of myself. I just happen to know that I am extremely good looking. It is just the simple truth." He says so casually, like it is in fact the simple truth.
Throughout our whole conversation he keeps blinking really oddly. It looked he had some weird eye twitch going on. To be honest it was freaking me out and was making me question his sanity.
"Oh, I get it now. You're the cocky one who thinks he owns the place. Well excuse me then your highness. I do apologize for ruining your lunch. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go try to get this crap out of my hair." I quickly sidestep the group and run out of the room, making my way to the bathroom.
I had to make do with what available, so I quickly used the hand soap and the sink water to get all gunk out of my hair. It took me a bit longer than I accounted for, so I decided to stay in the bathroom until classes were over. Luckily there was only a couple left, and all I had left for the day was dance practice. I changed into my shorts, deciding to just leave my tank on and made my way to the gym for practice.
The moment I stepped in the doors the girls were sending heated looks at me. These looks were different from my normal glares. They were infused with a deep level of hate, and I couldn't understand what had changed when I hadn't even attended my afternoon classes. Sticking with my usual, I shrug them off, and made my way over to the group to start my stretches. Just as I finished, Gwen and her group came in.
"Alright ladies. We're going to go over a couple of our dances. I want our new recruits to watch the first few times around, then you will be joining in. Do not worry if you don't get the steps right away beings, they are pretty complex.
We have all of our performances recorded, and I will be sending you each home with a copy to practice from. I expect you to have all the routines down pat within two weeks’ time.
Oh, and by the way. Congrats on making the team this year."
They didn’t waste a moment more and launched into the first dance, and I watched with a close eye. Their steps were actually pretty basic to me. I could probably perfectly copy them after watching only once. I mentally scoffed at that thought. I was starting to sound like a certain cocky black-haired jerk.
Once the LMFAO song ended Gwen looked back at us newbs.
"Any of you guys think you got that the first time around?" she challenged.
I honestly wasn't meaning to show off, but as per my typical self I couldn't back down. I stepped forward and watched Gwen c**k her head to the side.
"Hmm. I should've known you would be able to get it on the first round. Well, be my guest and show me what you've got." She flourished her arm beside her leading me to the front.
I made my way to front holding my head high and proud. When the song started again, I mimicked their moves perfectly, but I also added in a bit of my own style. It wasn't much, but enough to show them that I knew exactly what I was doing. The song was over quickly, and I couldn’t help but be proud of myself. They had doubted me, and I had most definitely proved them wrong. Gwen was just watching me with a curious expression before walking over to me and wrapping her arm around my shoulders.
"I don't know you very well, but I like you. I've also decided that you're going to be my new BFF." She proudly announced.
I made a move to interrupt her and ask why my opinion didn't matter, but she stopped me the moment I opened my mouth.
"Before you try to object, you should know that I always get my way. I'm a very determined girl, and you could tots use me to be on your side. You know, what with the whole school hating you for your disbelief in the Gods. Then for you running right into Sol at lunch and him talking to you. Every girl in this school would've willingly given their life to be you at that moment."
She probably would've continued with her rambling if it weren't for one of her friends shrieking.
"You cannot be serious! You really want to replace me with this... This non-believer?" By the last word her voice raised at least three octaves.
Gwen calmly looked at her and raised her eyebrow. "For one at least she doesn't have a shriek that can deafen me instantly. For two she is a genuinely nice girl who could really use a friend, so I'm going to be that friend for her. She has had a rough past and could use somebody right now."
I looked at her confused. How could she know that I had a rough past and needed somebody right now? I had never told anyone at this school about my mom. I would definitely have to ask her about this as soon as we were alone. When practice was over, I made my way over to Gwen. Before I had even reached her, she whipped around, grabbed my hand and dragged me out of the gym.
When we were a good distance away, she finally released my hand. "Sorry, but I know what you want to ask, and we can't have any nosey people hearing this."
I just shook my head and looked at her stupefied. "How on earth do you know what I want to ask?"
"Easy, I'm an oracle." She stated so simply.
"So, let me get this straight. You are an oracle. As in you can see the future?" I ask slowly enunciating each and every word.
"Yuppers! That would be me; I'm one of the few. There can only be five on the planet at a time, and lucky me gets to be one." She's telling me all of this like we are talking about the weather outside. Not like she's completely rocking my world.
I'm not sure how long I stood there processing this before Gwen slapped my cheek. Rubbing my sore cheek, I shot her a fierce glare.
"What the hell Gwen! What was that for?" I shouted.
She just shrugged, "You were in some sort of shock, and weren't responding to me. So, I was forced into doing the extreme and slapped you. It seemed to work rather well. Wouldn't you say?"
I just stared at her for a moment before turning on my heel and walking out.
It wasn't until I was laying in bed that night that Sol's odd blinking finally clicked with me.
He was blinking because of my shirt.
