“I said what is going on here?” He asked this time, his tone higher and more stern.
“She was bullying the poor Omega.” One of the boys in the crowd shouted.
Tristan shook his head, his face tainted with disgust before he turned to look at me. His eyes never left my face as he handed me the shirt that was lying beside me. I quickly put it over my body. He offered me a hand to help me up, and I felt a sense of awe wash over me. His touch, unexpectedly gentle, offered a stark contrast to the harshness I had just faced.
"Are you alright?" he inquired, genuine concern etched across his face.
Nodding, I struggled to find my voice, gratitude welling up within me.
"Thank you," I managed to say, my voice shaky.
“Let's get out of here.” He muttered to me before he started to walk out of school, and people made way for us to pass. My eyes were permanently stuck to the ground and my hands were around my arm. My body was shaking because of the magnitude of embarrassment I had just faced.
When we were out of the school, he stopped and turned to me. He looked worried, making me curious as to why he decided to help me.
“You are shaking.” He commented.
“Yeah, sorry. I’m just…”
“Scared?” He completed the sentence for me. I gave him a subtle nod.
He gave a reassuring smile, which made a knot settle in my stomach. Tristan never smiled at anyone, ”No one deserves to go through that. Especially not in this pack.”
I nodded in agreement to his statement.
“Come on, let me take you to the palace to freshen up.” He offered.
I thought of telling him that I lived near the palace and I could just go home, but something stopped me. Even though I worked in the palace, I had never really been inside. I have wanted to go in for so long and I was not going to let the opportunity pass by me. The walk there was short and when we arrived and got inside, he directed me to a quiet room that wasn’t in the palace. I was a bit disappointed, but then it didn’t matter because the palace was a very private place and he wouldn’t take me there just because he helped me get off the clutches of a bully.
He turned to face me while my face had started to coat with confusion about the reason why he was still here, “When did all of this start?” He asked me.
I sighed, "It's been like this for so long. I never thought anyone would step in and help me." I answered.
His eyes softened, understanding the weight of my words.
As he noticed my injuries, he insisted on tending to my wounds but I stopped him. I didn’t want to have the son of the alpha cleaning my wounds, because it was unethical.
"I should've done something sooner. It is my responsibility to and I am sorry that I am just noticing today,” he admitted, his voice tinged with regret. “What is your name?”
"Tessa," I replied, offering a small smile. The kindness I experienced in that moment was a balm to the wounds inflicted by Emma's cruelty.
He nodded, before he looked away from me. I stared at him, still waiting for him to leave so I could freshen up since that was what he brought me here to do. When he raised his eyes and found out I was staring at him, he finally spoke, "Do you know why I brought you here?"
I shook my head.
"I'm your mate," he revealed, the words hanging in the air. My eyes widened in surprise, my mind struggling to process the revelation. "I couldn't stand by and watch you suffer. I want to protect you from now forward."
Surprise bubbled within me at the unexpected twist in my fate. "Mate?" I whispered.
Tristan nodded, his gaze unwavering. "Yeah. It means we're connected, and I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe, away from all the bullies and whoever else is disturbing you.”
The sincerity in his eyes was undeniable. He meant what he was saying.
The realization that I had someone, my mate, by my side, filled me with a newfound sense of strength. This was the last thing I was expecting my day to turn out to be. I sat down on the bed in the room, and Tristan sat down beside me. If what he was saying was true, then I would never have to face what I just faced earlier today.
Heck, I didn't even have to leave the pack after I was done with high school. Allowing myself to slowly accept the situation, I couldn’t help but think about the way my life was about to change in the strangest way possible. I couldn’t wait
