Chapter 3:
Lucky watched the events unfold in front of him. He should have saved the man long before Adriana arrived, but he found no real reason to waste the effort. Before he could help, the sound of an approaching cart reached his ear. He’d never thought this would happen way out here, but if he’d thought about it, Death would wait for no man… or woman. When the time came for a person to die, he should have known somehow Death would arrive.
Like clockwork, around the bend came Death, or what passed for Death in this broken world he worked in. The ramshackle cart, pulled by a beast of burden more skin and bones than flesh, carried Death. Her name was Kay’Lob.
