Chapter 1 - The Objection
"Wedding?" Thunder's laugh echoes in the dining area. It was a quiet Saturday night in our house, but the announcement from dad brought out the life of the dinner.
Everyone is astounded by the news, they are looking at me which somehow made me blush. From someone who has never introduced a boyfriend, it sure is a surprise to hear a wedding announcement.
Thunder and Hunter, my twin brothers, are trying to lock eyes with me, but everything is overwhelming, and I know that they will be savage from this point on. I was not in my right mind when I agreed to it. I didn't consider this moment when I had to explain to my brothers. Mom is also looking at me as if checking if I am alright.
"Look, this isn't something that will happen next week. We still have 2 months to prepare. She agreed to this. You know that we can never force Naomi to do something she doesn't like." My dad sounds like he's trying to defend me.
"Are you pregnant?" My jaw instantly drops when Hunter asks. His jaw is clenching and so are his fists.
"N-no!" I answer immediately.
"Dad, I can't agree to this wedding. Lucas is our fried and I can say that Naomi deserves so much more. I know what kind of guy he is. I know everything he did in our younger years, No... definitely no." Thunder stands and reaches for his glass of water.
Dad and mom are waiting for me to say something.
"This is not something that was forced to me..." Hunter also stands and picks up his phone.
"I need to talk to Lucas first, The wedding is not happening."
"No, Hunter! Listen to me first." my eyes are surely begging when he starts dialing someone.
"I really don't want anyone else, but him. And you, guys, keep sabotaging us from the start. I just want to try this with him." My words don't have enough conviction.
Hunter excuses himself, it seems like the person he's trying to contact already picked up his call. My heart starts to race when he disappears from my sight. My brothers has always been overprotective of me, but I am no longer a teenager. I can make a decision on my own.
"Marriage is not something you can try out and leave once you're done with the person. That thing is for people who are certain on who they want to be with for a lifetime. I doubt Lucas is someone you can tolerate longer than you thought." Thunder's voice is scary now. I look at mom.
" I talked to her about it, Before we finalized this arrangement, we made sure that Naomi was comfortable with all the terms. We have known Lucas all his life, and I trust him like my own son. I won't just let anybody marry our unica hija."
Thunder is still in disbelief that our parents are siding with me. There is cold air around while we are waiting for him to say something.
" Okay, look, Naomi. I'm sorry for overreacting on that. You have never introduced a man, but suddenly you're breaking a wedding announcement. With a guy we've known almost all our lives. I'm just saying that you don't have to rush. You can start off as lovers. Why the need for marriage right away?"
"His parents are marrying him off this year. He's turning 32, and they need an heir soon. I will never have a chance on him if not now." I answer. He looks like he's about to lose his mind.
He turns around, and I know he's angry and disappointed at my decision.
"You and Hunter never gave us a chance to be together. You're always blocking us, obstructing every opportunity. And now..."
"So you are hurrying to get married because of his timeline?" His sarcastic remarks hurt me. Like I am the one running after Lucas. Well, our setup has been like that which is also why they don't want us to be together. There's a line of men courting me, but I never wanted anyone else.
"Enough with this discussion. We can setup a dinner with Lucas next time." Dad interrupted.
"We'll go talk to Lucas first. Please don't get your hopes too high on this, Naomi. I love you so much that I won't ever let you end up with just someone like him." He didn't give me time to respond. He walked away angrily.
I have always spoiled by my brothers. They treat me like a princess. This is the first time that they get mad at me again. I can't even remember the last time they raised their voice while talking to me.
The following days were nerve-wracking. I never heard from Hunter and Thunder after our dinner. They are my number one protector and support in everything except when it comes to Lucas. I made myself busy with the usual tasks. I am attending MBA, and also building my reputation in the company as a director now. Dad is still the owner of Fontanilla Group Companies and Stallion University. My brothers are the forefront successors. And here I am, the youngest and favorite child who ought to get all the good this life has to offer. People think I don't have to lift a finger, but I have worked all my life to not disappoint my family. The pressure of their expectations was heavy. Nevertheless, it was something that I am able to carry well.
I was consulting my adviser regarding my paper when my phone vibrated. I almost screamed when I saw the name. This is the first time Lucas has called.
"Yes?" I answered.
"Where are you?" His gentle voice still makes my heart throb unhealthily.
"I'm at university now. Why?"
"What time will you finish? We need to talk." He has no idea how that made my knees trembled even now that I'm sitting.
"In an hour. Let's meet at 7."
"I'll pick you up at 7 then. Bye."
And after that call, I can no longer focus on my paper. Atty. Casello probably noticed, so she let me leave earlier. Like a highschool girl who was excited on my first date, I took 30 minutes in my car to glam up. It has been a long day for me. What if Lucas wants to cancel the wedding? There are so many thoughts playing my head. He arrived at exactly 7.
"What about your car?" He asks after offering to drive me home after talking over dinner.
"It's okay. I'll call my driver to pick it up." I answer. He parks in a vacant space in front of a high-end Japanese restaurant. He takes a deep sigh as he looks inside trying to check something or someone.
"Are we expecting someone else to join?" I ask. He removes his seat belt and looks me straight in the eye. My face is flushed from the intensity of his glare.
"I..." He stops as he closes his eyes. He seems conflicted about whether to tell me or not.
"It's okay. Just tell me, Lucas."
"Everything happens so fast between us, Naomi. You were a little sister to me and nothing more than that." The truth hits me like a bomb, but I'm trying to remain composed. I recently broke up with my long-term girlfriend, and my parents informed me of this marriage with you. I didn't have time to heal or pull back myself together. There was too much going on at work too. I.. almost forgot about the wedding. I never thought you would agree to do that. Thunder came to me ready to shoot a gun... " So it's about my brothers again.
"Can we leave them out of the conversation for now, Lucas? I want us to be honest with ourselves. Did you never really notice how I feel for you? Or you just don't want to acknowledge it?" His eyes grew bigger. So all this time, he didn't know that I was in love with him.
"You actually have feelings? For me?" My deep sigh represents my distress. It feels like I am the only one pushing for the wedding to happen. I removed my seat belt too and got out of the car.
"Your brothers are waiting inside. Let's talk to them and clear out the misunderstanding." I walked away from him. He didn't even tell me my brothers would be here.
"I was hoping we can discuss the matter among ourselves first, but it turns out that I am just a nobody to you. I got the answer I wanted to hear. You won't choose me over your friendship with my brothers. We can call off the wedding as early as today, so we don't waste anyone's time in the preparation." I answered in a serious tone.
The rock road made it hard for me to walk fast as I'm only wearing high heels now. Why do I have to choose this footwear this morning of all time?
I dialed my driver's number as I turned my back on him. I can feel all sorts of emotions at the moment, but I was trained to remain calm in every situation, so I stood straight and waited for my driver to pick up my call. My knees were shaking when I saw Lucas from my peripheral view slowly approaching.
"Running away already?" This is bad for my heart. He stops right in front of me. His voice is a little hoarse and angry.
"Hi. Sorry I know I texted you earlier that I can drive alone and you can take a day off. But I'm in an unexpected situation..." my jaw drops when Lucas gently takes my phone from me.
"Hey. This is Lucas. We're having dinner with her brothers, just letting you know that she left her car in the university. Can you pick it up tonight?" The way he's making eye contact while saying that almost sends me shiver. There are sides of him that I haven't seen for sure.
"The purple Audi. Yes, thanks!" He ended the call after that.
"Just letting you know as early as now that I'm the jealous type. No phone calls or other distractions when you're with me. Your brothers are waiting inside. Let's go." His authoritative tone made me want to talk back. He's annoying.
I didn't move from where I was standing. He's still holding my phone, so I stared him dead in the eye.
"My phone..." I said in a cold tone.
He chuckled and put it inside the pocket of his coat. He finds this situation funny?
"I'll give it back after dinner. Come on, I'm starving." And just like that he started walking towards the restaurant. So he's holding my phone as a hostage. I can't believe the audacity. There is no other option, but to follow him. He stopped by the entrance, held the door open for me, and gestured me to come in first. He's acting like a gentleman now after being a red flag one minute ago.
We are assisted by the receptionist to the second floor where my brothers are waiting. I rolled my eyes at the sight of them. They greeted me with a kiss on the cheeks.
"How's school?" Hunter asks as he pulls a chair for me.
"It's the same old." I answer in a sassy tone. I just can't hide my annoyance.
Lucas sits opposite to me. We order first before Thunder starts talking about the marriage. I feel like my pride is being crushed at that moment.
"So Hunter and I talked to dad yesterday, and made it clear that we are against your 'supposed' wedding." My eyes are fixated at the chopsticks on the table. I will not say a thing even if I hate how he emphasized the word 'supposed'.
"Why?" That one-word question from Lucas brings silence to our table.
"Let's not pretend here, Lucas. We know how you treat a woman. You obsess over them, treat them like a property because you don't know how to love. Everything and everyone you have, you treat them as your possession." Thunder answers in a casual tone.
"Them? I only had 2 exes, Thunder. The only thing I'm sorry about is that we have different perspectives on love. I acknowledge that I am obsessed, territorial, selfish, and greedy for love. That's how a man should be. You can never guilt-trip me for pouring everything I have over love."
I cannot believe that they are discussing about his ex while I am there awkwardly listening. I feel their stares from time to time, but I will not say a thing. I was not expecting my brothers here. I want to discuss this with Lucas alone, but he has already ruined the moment.
"Heard that, Naomi?"
"You are practically marrying a devil. Never gonna let that happen. It's about time to end up all fantasies of that wedding. I have a lot of friends that I can introduce. Nevermind. I really like Brent for you if I'm being too honest here." I bite my lower lip. He starts talking about Brent Wilson, my childhood bestfriend.
"Don't hurt me, dude. We're friends since forever. How can you call me a devil?" He's only concerned about being called a devil. I guess he won't mind if I marry someone else.
"I entrust my back to you, but I can't let you marry my sister. Those are 2 different things. Hope you understand."
I want to go now. I really can't last another minute sitting with them.
"The wedding preparation has started. It has been announced publicly. Canceling it will entail backlash from the stakeholders. Do you have idea how the stocks rose after the announcement of Simon and Fontanilla wedding?" So he agreed to the wedding for status. I should not have expected anything.
" I think I made a rash decision, Hunter and Thunder. If you're so against it then I agree to cancel. Dad will take care of the financial losses." All three of them are looking at me as I stand. My eyes are as cold as ice as I look down on Licas.
"Alright. We are canceling the wedding. Good decision, Naomi." Thunder's expression is now more relaxed.
"Give my phone back." I said in serious tone. Lucas smirked and reached for the water. He seems surprised in what I said about the cancelation.
"I said after we eat." He answers bravely not breaking the eye contact with me.
"I lost my appetite, so I'm done eating" I answer. My monotone should at least save my pride.
My knees shake when he pushes his chair back and stands quick off the mark.
"Agree, it's way too late to eat anything. I'll take you home." That's not a question but an assertive statement.
"I-I can go home alone. I just need my p-phone back..."
"We should talk."
"We can talk some other time." I don't think I can handle him now that he's angry. His lips in one line.
"Why do you even have her phone? Give it back, I will drive her home." Hunter's voice is already warning.
"Bro, she's 26. Stop treating her like she's still in Junior High. We were dragged into this marriage discussion, and we haven't properly talked about this between us. We deserve to have a mutual decision to end this."
I was stunned when Hunter stands too and comese close to Lucas.
"She already said you can discuss it some other time. I'm not comfortable with you taking her home. I have my reservations... " Lucas cut him off.
"I want to discuss it now... with her. Alone. How do we settle this?" I interrupted them. They look like they are about to raise their voice. I don't want this to escalate.
"Sure. Let's talk in your car then. I left my laptop there too. I'll text you guys when I get home. We will go ahead so enjoy your dinner." I dragged Lucas by the arms. I didn't wait for my brothers to respond.
"Damn." I almost stumbled when my shoe caught a big rock. I felt two hands held my shoulders.
"Clumsy," Lucas murmured. I rolled my eyes and pushed his hands away.
He opened the car door for me. I didn't say anything or even look at him. I saw him answering a phone call before getting into the driver's seat.
"Just received a death threat from your brother. Fasten your seat belt please, we can't afford to get into an accident tonight." His sarcasm tickled my heart. He handed my phone back and started the engine.
