Chapter 6

"Well, maybe if he tried learning something, Mr. Vinny won't pick on him so much," Charles reasoned. "That doesn't matter. Smart or not, that grumpy old man gives the hardest problems and the lowest scores. And he is damn scary!" Bea sighed, replying to Charles’ comment about the sadistic math teacher. “He had always scared me and whenever I had to attend his classes, I’d shrink down so fast just to not get called.” "Is it that hard?" He asked as I sat back down at our table. "It is. No other words to describe him. Di-ffi-cult!" Bea exclaimed and I laughed at them as they continued their little banter. Charles was trying to defend Mr. Vinny while Bea did nothing but insult him. It was comical. They were fighting over a teacher. "Hey guys," Ross said as she sat next to Charles. If I had a tiring night last night, Ross' face made me look completely healthy compared to hers. She looked extremely drained and she didn't even bother to cover it up. "What's the matter, babe? You looked exhausted," Bea said, noticing the dark circles beneath her swollen eyes. "Have you been crying, Ross?" Charles asked gently, reaching for her hands to offer comfort. But when he did, Ross flinched and curled into a ball in his seat. "They're having a divorce." She mumbled, almost a whisper. Our eyes went wide at what she said. Who's getting divorced?! "Who is it?!" Bea asked the question we were all dreading to hear the answer to. Rossalyn creased her brows and tears started falling down her cheeks. Charles, who was sitting beside her, awkwardly patted her back. He was not used to comforting crying girls. I gave out a small laugh at what a failure Charles was doing and B kicked my foot to shut me up. “My parents,” She sobbed. “I don’t even know what to do.” “Oh my god, that’s terrible,” I sympathized and walked over to Ross to hug her. There were no words left to say. In moments like this, all we could hope for was that she gets better and heals over time. “Do you want to talk about it?” I asked her after her sobs died down. “God, no,” She says with spite. “I would rather choke to death than speak about them. They didn’t even weigh me in on their decisions. They just chose to split and move away. As if I wasn’t even in the picture!” She began to sob again. “Shh, it’s going to be all right.” We did our best to calm her down and get her to speak. She was rather emotional today and spiteful. She even mentions not going home again. “You have to see the light at the end of the tunnel, Ross. It’s not always going to be this hard. Besides, you’ll have two houses to sleep over at. Isn’t that kind of cool?” "Yes, it is cool to sleepover in Brazil. Mom said Dad's moving to Brazil before Christmas. God, he can't even stay for Christmas!" She slumped in her chair, pushing away her food. I furrowed my brows, worried about her. I haven't seen her this dejected. The last time I saw her this depressed, her brothers left her to live with their aunt in the south. "Ross, calm down. What are you talking about?" Bea asked and I scrunched up my face. She looked like she was talking to a five-year-old. Charles sent a glare towards my direction and I let out a sigh. "Why don't you tell us what happened, Ross?” She took a long breath and drank water before speaking up. "I overheard mom and dad talking last night. They were shouting at each other. Like they think I can't hear them. Dad wanted to move away, saying he needed a break, but mom wouldn't let him. The conversation ended with dad offering a divorce and mom crying about it." She said with no emotion. "Mom told me this morning that dad's going away to Brazil for some time and that he won't be able to spend Christmas with us. I couldn't even say anything to try and save their relationship." Then once again, tears spilled. Bea walked up to Ross and hugged her, whispering something in her ear which made Ross stop sniffling. "I'm sure your dad's bluffing, Ross," Charles said, smiling weakly. It's hard to smile when someone's going through something. But it's something you have to do to lighten your spirits and avoid depression in the group. One smile motivates everyone! Well, at least that's what Hailey said. That wasn't one of her best pieces of advice. She could be a therapist one day. If she wants it. “I’m not even shocked he wanted a divorce. Mom doesn’t even try to hide her boyfriends and flings. Dad was just so blinded by her that he completely overlooked that. But this was all so sudden.” "Just give them some time. That's what parents do. They fight, then they make up." Charles advised. So, now he's the counselor. "I freaking hope so. I don't think I can live with myself yet if everybody chooses to move away." She sighed and I noticed that she'd been sighing a lot lately. "I could live with you," Bea beamed, sitting back in her seat. "Me, as well. I can live with you." I told her with a chuckle. "Ross, I could live with you. But if these losers are there, I don't think I can stay for a day." Charles joked and I rolled my eyes at him. "I can't live with you for a day, anyways." She grimaced, seeing that Charles was laughing. Bea and I laughed lightly seeing her take humor in this. It was a tough situation to be in. Divorce is always the hardest for children. I don’t know why parents never realize that. Ross showed a smile that you couldn't quite see if you weren't paying attention. It was merely there but it was a smile. A sign of hope. I should let you know that cheering up Rossalyn is the hardest task in the world. When she gets bummed, she stays like that for weeks. And when it's serious matters like these, which tend to come a lot often, she stays depressed for months. Sympathetically, we spend the night over at Ross. Even James went over for comfort and support. Her mother had moved out. Her father did not go home that night. It was a silent night for us all. The next day, she was MIA in her own house. For a moment, we thought she had run away. But she left a note on the kitchen counter saying she was just out to buy some food.
