Moments passed after his rambling on and I finally got him to focus. At least for a moment.
"So, if the answer is sixty-four, the value of x should be—umm, somewhere within this book? James guessed for the third time tonight.
And I sighed for the millionth time.
"Divide the answer into the number you have, then that's the value. Darn it, James! Pay attention." I screamed at him, annoyed that he wasn't taking this seriously.
He was building a bridge with Lego building blocks that he got from my brother's room. It was seriously annoying having him play around while I threw questions at him. He wasn't even trying to answer those questions. We had started easily, beginning with basic Physics-related questions and throwing in some Earth Science queries. But so far, he had answered three correctly and the others were just out of his mind.
I know I said that James is tolerable, but right now, I don't mind hitting him on the head and it won't matter if he's my friend or not. I am so close to snapping and throwing this Physics book at him. As in so close that I have to take a deep breath and count to ten to prevent it from happening every time he decides not to answer the question.
"James Tucker, I swear if you don't answer this next question correctly, I will throw this book at you. I don't care if you get hurt, you annoying pea-brain." I warned him and he looked at me for a second, as if he was thinking of the consequences. He should think about what he's going to do because he just might regret it.
"Throw it at me, sweetheart," He grinned and I could feel flames in my eyes. Is he challenging me?!
"The question, I mean." He laughed but I could sense the fear in his voice. He should be afraid. "Calm down Lottie. I didn't ask for the book. I meant the question."
"And I'm glad you didn't, James." I smiled, happy that for one moment I had his focused and undivided attention. I took the opportunity and gave him the question.
Thankfully, he answered all of the remaining questions correctly and I spared my book. It could have been badly injured if I had thrown it at James' stone-hard head. It was almost nine and I was already tired of getting my patience constantly tested by being with him, so I offered to take a break and he gladly did so.
I sighed, exhausted. "I'm going to get a glass of water. Do you want anything?"
"Brownies, Charlotte!" he shouted.
I widened my eyes at him. What is he thinking? Waking the whole neighborhood? "Don't shout, James! You'll get me in trouble."
I silently made my way to the kitchen and grabbed brownies and fudge from the pantry and water from the fridge. Today is Wednesday and it has been three days since I 'volunteered' to tutor James. And out of all days, he chose to ask for my help tonight. Tonight, when I was supposed to start my paper for a writing class, I had been procrastinating for too long now. I started dodging this task a week ago, and I only had more or less than two weeks to submit this to Mr. Hansen.
I cannot tell you how pleased I am that we are already finished with his assignment and I even did an extra task of making him study. I can't help but be proud of myself. We got off to a great start!
I walked back to the room only to find James cuddling with my stuffed toy on my bed. This is a hideous sight. I slept in that bed, with that stuffed animal, and his drool was falling off his ajar mouth. I kicked his feet to wake him up and placed the food I brought on the desk.
"Eat, then leave."
He rubbed his eyes, yawning. "I have never seen someone so eager for me to leave."
I just want to get a good night's sleep tonight so I can have a productive and efficient day tomorrow. Is it too much to ask?
I yawned. "Can you just leave? And close the door when you do, please."
He smiled his toothy grin and drowsy blue orbs. "You look cute when you’re sleepy, Lottie."
