I woke with a start in the front seat of the SUV. Thank goodness Turner hadn’t tried to touch me while I slept. The sun was mid-section in the sky. I stared at the orange hue cast along the sky. I needed a plan. Turner had been driving all night eventually he would have to stop and rest.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“Good morning, sunshine. I have a cousin who lives on this side of the time. He can keep us for a while. At least until Walter pays me and I can get a better job.”
I stopped myself from gagging. The things I had to do to survive. I couldn’t believe he was planning our lives together. I wasn’t sad about bursting his bubble soon.
“I’m going to be honest. I can’t wait to find a bed and strap you to it. I’ve been thinking about it all night. This has to be the best deal I’ve ever made.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I bet.” I couldn't even offer him a smile.
He laughed and his giant hand landed on my thigh. I bit my tongue to keep the gasp in.
"You're so beautiful. I can't believe Walter sent you away. He's always loved a pretty face. You telling me he never tried to make a move on you?"
I scowled and looked out the window. My Foster Father was a pervert. We all knew it and his wife turned a blind eye when he got handsy with the older girls in the home. Ashley never let him get close to us. When she couldn't fight him Reid got between us. Reid was an intimidating guy and he kept everyone in line. He only stayed in the house because he did work for Walter and Pearl but he got out of the system a long time ago. I wondered where my siblings thought I was.
“You know it sweetness. We need to make a stop for gas and I need to make a call to my cousin.”
“Alright.” I swallowed.
The car turned into a sleepy gas station with one attendant in sight. She sat under the gas pump chewing bubble gum and reading a magazine I’d never heard of.
“I won’t be long. No funny business Stormy. Remember what I said would happen?” He said when he stood outside the car.
“I know the deal.”
“That’s what I like to hear.” The car door slammed and the doors locked.
The deal is to get out of here. The damn car could only be opened with a key. I rummaged in the vehicle for a possible spare key. All I found were stale chips, old newspapers and a screwdriver. My only other option if I couldn’t unlock the door which would be extremely difficult with a screwdriver from the inside, would be to shatter the windscreen. I learned from Connor that a hammer would be the only object found in a car strong enough to do that. Or a fire extinguisher if I hit hard enough. I tucked my hand under the seat and searched for one.
“Come on every car is supposed to have a fire extinguisher.”
I shifted over to the driver’s seat and stuck my hand under it. I could have jumped for joy when my hand touched cold metal. I yanked the small red can out. I slammed it against the passenger window once. Nothing happened. Once more with extra force a crack formed.
“Good,” I said.
Turner walked out of the gas store.
“Damn it.”
He stopped to talk to the station clerk. I couldn’t break the glass without him noticing! He walked over to the car and opened the door. Blood drained from my face.
“Hey— hey, what are you doing with that?” He barked.
I lifted the can and to hell with it. With all the force I could conjure I hurled the can at his head. It hit his eye and he stumbled back.
“s**t!”
I leapt forward and kicked his chest, gripping the sheet around my chest. The gas station lady screamed.
“You little b***h!” Turner yelled. “I’m going to kill you.”
If you can catch me, I thought.
I raced out of the car and pushed my legs until I was out of the station and out on the main road. Turner’s car revved. He was right behind me.
I ran across the road, causing an on-rushing truck to serve to the right. I hoped it hit Turner but it missed narrowly. I ran into the trees. Gunshots sounded.
I yelped but kept running. Sticks and stones stuck into my feet as I ran. Turner parked somewhere. I couldn’t hear his car but I knew he was behind me. I felt like I was running around in circles. The woods were dark and dense despite the blazing sun it failed to penetrate the thick trees.
“You won’t get away from me honey!” Turner hackled, causing all the birds to fly from their nests.
I ran as low as I could. The last thing I wanted was a bullet to the head. I didn’t notice a gun in the car.
I pressed my body behind a tree. I held a hand over my heart. I felt faint. My younger foster sister came to mind. I’d never see her again. I could never go back. I would never see Reid again. I would even miss Connor and his dickhead antics.
“Come out, come out Stormy. I shouldn’t have trusted a pretty face. You’re all trouble. You played against my manly nature.”
He was right behind me. I sucked in a breath.
“There you are!”
A shot fired. I screamed and fell forward. My arm burned and filled with blood.
“Damn it!” Turner yelled and launched several bullets into the trees.
I rolled down a mudslide with nothing to drip I kept rolling. I smashed into rocks, sticks and other debris. There was no stopping me. I came to a bone-crushing halt. Every bone in my body rattled. Sound and vision were suspended. My body had given up.
