GLANCING OVER HIS SHOULDER, Kieran was shocked to see the detective from outside the house pounding down the road after him. He had been sure no-one had seen what direction he took. Not only was he being pursued, he was being caught; the detective was slowly but surely closing the distance between the two of them.
He reacted instinctively to the unexpected situation by changing direction suddenly and running straight across the road. He narrowly avoided being hit by an oncoming car by slipping between two parked cars and up onto the pavement on the opposite side of the road. He then continued along the road in the same direction he had been going before turning to head down the road that led to his left.
