13 On the evening of 3rd February 1762, Fort Royal surrendered to General Monckton. The next day, the British Grenadiers and a body of Montgomerie’s Highlanders took possession of the gates. The Highlanders marched with the high skirl of bagpipes, while the Grenadiers were silent save for the regular tramp of their boots. At nine in the morning of the 5th of February, the French garrison marched out of the fortress. As they had surrendered on honourable terms, they carried their colours, and each man held his musket and ammunition.
