Chapter 1 For Sheriff Larry Crabtree, some things stayed true year in and year out. For instance, a man ought to be nice and friendly to gate agents at the airport. Those folks took a world of grief day after day, and when a feller smiled and said howdy, he might just get a better seat. Or how about looking both ways before you cross the street? Seemed like one any fool didn’t need to be told, but he and his deputies scraped up one or two boneheads every year from the far Southwestern Virginia streets and back roads. His favorite truism, though, was one he’d learned from his great-granny Pearlie when he’d been knee high to a grasshopper. Ain’t nothin’ in life so bad that fresh-baked cookies can’t make it better.
