“We’ll eat when I’m ready to eat, Miss Priss,” she snapped. Then she forcefully pushed me into the outside cabin wall with two jabbing fingers. They felt like a knife blade pressed to my heart. “What’s your plan, Lydia?” Jack ventured, cautiously, as if he were afraid of what she was about to do. He’d just dried off and sat back casually in a deck chair to watch. If it had been just me in the boat with her, I might have been fish food by the time the night was over. But even if Lydia thought herself tough and in charge, she didn’t challenge Jack. I’m sure that was why she felt free to be so mean with me that night.
