Chapter Eleven Flatbread and Family Valentina noticed again how dirty Hazel’s feet were—as she ran, the bottoms flashing at them were almost black—just as she realized why. The hallway ended in a doorway and beyond it was the same rocky soil they had been rolling over for days. But they weren’t outside; the air was breathable and there was no sign of the storm. They were under a dome, a massive dome that contained an entire village of people. They were emerging from a sort of gatehouse set in the wall that ran around everything in a great circle. Opposite them was a similar but larger gatehouse, like the wall and the building behind them built from large blocks of rock the same color as the ground.
