Adaeze felt like weeping. It was barely a day since her parents were gruesomely murdered by his elder brother and she was been maltreated in the palace she once knew as her home.
" Efulafu( big fool), you can't wash ordinary plates. Just take a good look at what you have washed." Do they look like they were washed at all?" Oluchi said with venom as she picked some of the plates and almost put them on Adaeze's face.
Adaeze just shifted back to prevent the plates from hitting her in the face.
" Now, your punishment for wasting too much time on one house chore is that you will not be given food today," Oluchi said with a smirk.
Adaeze stood there dumbstruck. She could not believe that Oluchi could do such a thing to her.
" Are you still here looking at me? Will you get lost before I beat the life out of you?" Oluchi shouted angrily.
Adaeze timidly started running into the palace but Oluchi's voice stopped her.
" And where do you think you are going? Will you get the broom and sweep the whole palace before I meet you there?" Oluchi said venom.
Adaeze quickly turned around and went to do what she was asked to do.
Sweeping the palace and the compound was not an easy task for Adaeze but she tried to make sure that everywhere was sparkling clean as she swept multiple times.
She did not want a repetition of what happened earlier so she took her time to ensure that everywhere was clean.
She sat on the floor tiredly as soon as she was done sweeping.
It was already evening and the moon shone brightly in the sky. Adaeze tiredly sat on the floor with her gaze on the sky.
Was she really going to sleep hungry? Why did her uncle murder her parents? Her little mind was filled with unanswered questions.
" Hey! Take eat fast," Olamma whispered to Adaeze while looking around to ensure that no one was watching her.
She had sneaked in the food when she was sure that her parents had gone to bed and the guards had gone to the entrance of the palace.
Adaeze tiredly sat up and looked at Olamma in a daze. She could not help but wondered why she had brought food for her.
" Don't look at me that way! I'm not like my parents. Just hurry up with the food before we get caught." Olamma said with her eyes trailed on the door.
Adaeze nodded and ate the food greedily in case her evil uncle and aunt suddenly came, she would have eaten enough that would last till the next day.
In no time she was done with the meal. It was indeed a sumptuous meal.
" Olamma, dalu ( thank you). May the gods of our land bless you." Adaeze said with a smile on her face.
Now she would be able to sleep well.
"Isiee ( amen)," Olamma said with a smile and she quickly sneaked out of the small hut the way she had come in.
" Nne( mother) don't leave me here. I want to go with you." Adaeze said with tears running down her face.
" Nwam ( my child), you can't go with me. I'm going on a long journey and I'm not familiar with the route. But I promise to watch over you and also check on you." Queen Ebubechi said with a forced smile.
Adaeze was not ready to have it. Her mind was made up already. She would go with her parents. The suffering was too much for her.
There was no way she would go back without her parents.
" Adaeze nwam (my child), listen to your mother. The journey we are embarking on is very far. You can't go with us."
" Stay strong. You are a princess. I want you to show my brother and his family that you are the true daughter of your father."
" But you can't do that if you go with us. Now go back and endure all the hardship. Don't give up! There is light at the end of the tunnel." King Chibuike said with a smile that did not reach his eyes.
He was pained by the separation from his daughter but there was nothing he could do about it.
They bade her goodbye and watched her go back.
The feel of something cold on her body jolted Adaeze out of her sleep.
So she had been dreaming. She wondered but it felt real. She subconsciously touched her face. There were traces of tears on her face.
" What are you still doing on the bed? Will get out of here and get to work?" Oluchi yelled angrily jolting Adaeze out of her thoughts.
" It seems you need to be reminded of what you are. You are no longer a princess but a slave. Get use to it!" Oluchi with a smirk.
" Now get to work before I lose my temper," Oluchi yelled angrily making Adaeze run out of the small hut.
The cold breeze hit her body making her shiver subconsciously.
Her teeth were chattering and the shivering intensified. She suddenly realized that her clothes were wet.
She wept bitterly as she realized that her aunt poured cold water on her body.
She suddenly remembered her dream. She would be strong for her father.
With this thought, she wiped out her tears and continued with what she was asked to do ignoring the cold.
She suddenly wished that her clothes were dried as she swept. She stopped sweeping when she realized that her clothes became dry immediately she thought of it.
She immediately became scared. How could she just wish for something and it would be done? Her little mind wondered.
" Don't be scared. It happened because you are special." A voice she knew whispered to her.
It was the voice that had spoken to her earlier before the murder of her parents.
She was special? How? Adaeze thought to herself silently.
" Yes, you are special. You were born with great powers. Even your parents knew nothing about it. Your uncle tried to cage it but he can not do so."
" But for now, you will pretend to be powerless while I teach you how to use your powers. After which I will tell you what to do." The voice whispered again.
Adaeze nodded and smiled for the first time since the death of her parents while she continued sweeping.
She soon became used to being a slave. Olamma sometimes brought food for her in the night.
But as they grew older, Olamma became hostile to her.
