Michael moved Ally off his lap and moved to pick up one of the bigger shards. He realised what it was and looked up at me. Our eyes met, and for a millisecond, I thought that he had remembered that he loved me, that we had made vows to each other. His eyes soon dropped back to the glass on the floor, though. I reached for the only surviving piece, the glass snowflake that had been inside the bauble. As I picked it up, I caught my hand on a sharp piece of glass and cut it. I was so numb that I barely even felt it. “Mikey, she’s bleeding all over the rug, do something,” Ally said. I realised from her whiny tone that it wasn’t out of concern for me, though. She just didn’t want my blood on her new things.
I felt my wolf stir inside of me. Lilly wanted to rip her apart. “How could he leave us for someone so callous?” she growled. I didn’t have a good answer, but I knew that I couldn’t let Lilly out. No matter how horrid and whiny Ally was, she was Michael’s mate. I couldn’t hurt her without hurting him, and even now, I didn’t want to hurt him. Michael tore a strip of fabric from his t-shirt and asked for my hand. I held it out for him, and he bound the cut. I could no longer hold back my tears as his hand touched mine. It hurt knowing that he would never touch me again. Once he was done, he pulled his hand back, and it took every bit of self-control in me not to grab it and hold on tight.
“I will have a room made up for you on the visitor’s floor until we find you something more permanent,” he said softly. I nodded, tears still streaming down my face. “May I have some privacy to pack my things?” I asked. Michael smiled at me, “Of course,” he replied. He seemed relieved that I wasn’t fighting. To be honest, I could see that there wasn’t any point. He had made his choice, and it was no longer me. “Ally, my love, I will show you the rest of the pack while Dawn gathers her things,” he said, ushering his mate towards the door. She looked back at me sulkily, pouting. “They are the Luna’s things. What if she takes something that I would have wanted?” she said. I snorted in disbelief. How could the Moon Goddess have matched my wonderful Michael with that spoiled little b***h? “Then I will buy you a new…whatever. Dawn is entitled to her things. She is losing enough don’t you think?” he told her as he shut the door behind them leaving me alone.
I didn’t want to move. I just wanted to curl up on the sofa and cry myself into oblivion. Lilly wasn’t ready to lay down and die though. She made me start moving. “One foot in front of the other, come on Dawn. We are better than this. Let’s get you packed, and get the hell out of here before they come back,” she said. I nodded. She was right. I headed for the bedroom and pulled the biggest suitcase from the back of the closet. I filled it with my clothes, shoes and jewellery. I pulled out another case for my more personal items, such as the framed picture of my family that I kept in the living room. I took everything that was most precious to me. If only I could have put Michael into one of those cases and taken him. I looked down at the rings on my wedding finger. They had meant so much to me. I considered taking them off and leaving them behind but decided against it. The thought of her wearing the symbol of our love was just too painful. She could get her own. I put on my coat and grabbed my cases. I took one last look at the place that had been my home for years and one last tear escaped my eye as my gaze stopped on the broken bauble, still laying on the floor stained with my blood. I wiped it away and walked out of the door for the last time.
I made my way to the small elevator and took it down to the lobby. The doors parted, and I saw members of the pack that I had grown to love crowding excitedly around their new Luna. I felt another stab of betrayal. Had I meant so little to them? I quickly headed for the door. Hoping to not be seen. Once I was outside, I breathed in the cold winter air, happily feeling the stabbing icy pain as it filled my lungs. It was better than the pain in my heart. I unlocked the boot of my car and put one of the cases inside. Before I could grab the other one, a hand took it and lifted it for me. “Let me help you, Luna,” Greg said. He was Michael’s beta. “Thankyou Greg. that is very kind of you, but I am not your Luna, not anymore,” I told him. “She hasn’t been made the official Luna yet, so you are still technically the pack Luna,” he grinned cheekily. “Besides, you are my Luna,” he added more solemnly. I smiled up at him. His big brown eyes looked sad. “Thank you for saying that. It means more to me right now than you could imagine,” I said softly. “Where are you going?” he asked. I sighed, “Home,” I replied.
I got into my car and waved goodbye to Greg as I began the drive out of the Blood Moon pack grounds for the final time. I reached the gate, and the guard nodded respectfully, a look of pity on his face. “We will miss you, Luna,” he said as I passed by him. I nodded my thanks, smiling gratefully. I stopped the car once I had passed through, and as the gates closed behind me, closing away that chapter of my life, I steeled myself for what I had to do next. “I, Dawn Reyolds, daughter of Alpha Daniel Reynolds of the Blue Moon pack, renounce myself as Luna of the Blood Moon pack and all my ties to the blood moon pack. I renounce Alpha Michael Lewis as my chosen mate and Alpha,” I choked on the words a little, but I got them out. A pain ripped through my body as I felt my bonds with the pack break. I heard a howl from within the pack grounds and knew that it was Michael and his wolf Cole. I could hear the pain in their howl, but I just started the car and pushed through my own pain to begin the drive back to the Blue Moon pack.
