“NIX HELP!” I screamed in my mind. If there was ever a moment, this was it. I needed her.
As soon as I screamed to her in my mind, I felt the cold breath of death kiss me on my neck. It had come to greet me. Nix was back, and I was shifting. The pain was nothing in this world.
Nix took off running into the forest. She ran hard and fast. As we got to the waterfall, she did slow down but was listening close for anyone in pursuit. At that moment, there wasn’t anyone.
Walking up to the water, Nix could see her reflection. For the first time in our lives, I got to see what my wolf looked like. She was easily twice the size of any wolf I had seen. Towering tall at over 10 feet. Her coat was shiny and a smooth black and white. The colors seemed to wage war over her body.
The sound of paws hitting the ground pulled Nix and I out of our trance. She began scaling the wall leading up to the waterfall’s ledge.
The journey took longer than she had expected, but then again, it was easily over a thousand-foot drop.
Making it to the waterfall's edge, there was a rock standing out of the water. It was like the Moon Goddess had specifically placed it there for this very moment.
Nix allowed me to turn back to humans. To our surprise, we remained clothed. Maybe the Moon Goddess saw our death as a blessing to the pack and wanted to help.
Walking out onto the edge, I had to quickly turn as my pursuers had caught up. They were Alpha Leo, Luna Jennica, Jace, and Beta Ash. Everyone but Jace looked at me with contempt. Jace looked sad and confused.
“Rayne, what is this?” Jace asked with a broken voice.
My heart cried out. Nix let go of a howl. The pain in her howl was felt so deeply that I felt my soul break.
“Jace, I can’t. I am broken. You need more. More than I am. More than I will ever be. You were with another, I can feel it. I cannot. This life has not been kind. No more. I will suffer no more.” My mind was moving so quickly. What I was trying to say was making very little sense.
“Rayne, please, we need to talk. I do, I do want you.” Jace is straining against the tears, clawing to get out.
This is it. I can’t listen to them anymore. I won’t end it, and he will surely torture and kill me. I glance my eyes up to the full moon, taking up residence in the sky. She is so bright that not a single star can be seen shining past her beauty. The moon beckons me to join her. Quiet, peace, home. Yes, home.
I spread my arms out and allowed myself to fall backward. The fall is peaceful. I close my eyes and allow death to kiss me goodnight.
