CHAPTER 9: Nick –––––––– “The end,” whispered Nick as he closed one of the books that Maggie had sent with the kids. “Another one,” said Peter. “I’ve already read you two.” He sat up. “It’s time for bed.” “But we’re not tired,” said Isabella. Davy snuffled in his sleep, turning in the playpen. “Shhh.” Nick crawled out from between the two kids. “Don’t wake your brother.” “Another story. Please,” begged Isabella. “Then we’ll go to sleep. We promise.” “Tomorrow.” “Kisses,” said Peter. “That I can do.” He leaned down, his heart turning to mush as the little boy’s arms wrapped around his neck. “Good night.” He kissed Peter on the cheek.” “Night, Uncle Nick.” Peter tucked his stuffed bear in his arms and rolled over. Nick walked to the other side of the bed. “Goodnight, Isabella.”
