Truth be told, I had an ulterior motive. It’s true we’d gotten along really, really well for the few days we were alone on our return to the Kalalau trailhead, but living with someone is a risk. So I wanted a place I’d be happy living in if we decided to part ways.

After a quick shower I sent text messages to Nina and to El Speed letting them know I got the job and would be staying on the island, at least through the winter. Then I decided to walk through the town of Bar Harbor, maybe browse in a few of the less touristy shops.
