Jackson, Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack, had watched so many friends find their mates that he was starting to give up hope. His lycan Loki would not allow him even to consider taking a chosen mate, sure that their fate was just around the corner, but he had lost faith. Throwing himself into his work and his pack, he never expected to meet his mate, a wolfless half-blood, while working on a research project for his King. Instantly enthralled, he knew that he would never allow this woman to be threatened as long as he lived.

Caroline knew all about shifters. Having been raised by two, she understood their strength and the possessiveness of their mates, but she never thought she might be mated to one. She left the pack after her first mate rejected her for not having a wolf, living like a human, and surviving as a hacker with the "Midnight Phoenix" handle. When the King calls her for a favor she decides the timing was perfect to get away for a while because she was being hunted for her work against the supernatural slave trade.

Using the pack as a safe haven from other supernatural beings, Caroline faced a crazy, childish, brave, caring mate, one that she could not help but admire. From the first moment, she was unwilling to give up on the gift she had been given by the Moon Goddess. Taking hold with both hands, willing to fight to keep her mate, she faced each challenge, but would she be strong enough to persevere?

Will their love be strong enough to fight the ghosts from both of their pasts? Can Jackson's family protect them when they cannot protect themselves? Will Caroline be able to face those that feel she is too weak to lead? And what will happen when they discover that the man they all believed to have died was alive?

Alpha Jackson
Jackson    It had been six months since Jackson had agreed to take over as Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack, and on days like today, he questioned the wisdom of his decision. He had spent the night in his computer lab again, trying to break the security on a few hard drives and flash drives they had gathered when they had raided the Dauphin Pack. Jackson knew that they contained information that the lycan King and council could you to protect packs from misguided and evil leadership.  So far, he had only been able to break into the laptop they had taken from the guard house at the Delphin Pack. It contained data about each pack member, their behaviors, and their level of participation in the Alpha's plans to create a pure bloodline. The information was disgusting and made Jackson so angry that his lycan side, Loki, tried to take control numerous times when he had first read it.  The Alpha had been working with members of the Shifter Council to move the ideology of the shifter world backward. He felt women were weak, homosexuals were evil, and only ranked wolves mattered. Jackson felt these ideas were laughable as he had been taken down by a mixture of shifter races of all s****l preferences and being led by Marcia, Queen of the Lycans.  Knowing that he was reaching the end of his skills, he decided that he would have to reach out to the King of the Lycans himself, Marcus. Not only was he a computer genius, but he was also the person that asked him to get into the files in the first place. A glance at the clock on the wall showed that it was still far too early to call the King and Queen.  Standing, Jackson began to stretch and make his way to the stairs that would bring him to the main level of the pack house. He had grown up in this house, but many changes were implemented when Marcus challenged his father and took over the pack. The lab he currently worked in was once the pack dungeons, where the former Alpha would keep his enemies. The new dungeons were located in a different building to prevent escapees from accessing the Omegas and pups that lived in the pack house.  Previously, the pack house was only open to ranked members of the pack. The Omegas that cooked and cleaned would be expected to return to the cottages out back after their tasks were complete. Now it was open to any non-mated member of the pack and the families of the ranked members. While it was more crowded than it used to be, it contained joy, something the old Alpha had forced out during his reign.   Leaving the pack house, Jackson headed towards the training fields for the morning workout. Those he passed lowered their heads slightly, causing Jackson to feel a slight sting of loss. When he had been Beta, he had been known as the personable one. Pack members would frequently come to him joking and laughing. The longer he held the Alpha title, the harder he found it to be that man. Now the weight of the pack weighed heavily on his shoulders, and without an entire team of ranked members, his work never seemed to be complete.  When he reached the field, he smiled at the sight before him. All members of the pack not currently working were together developing their bodies and skills. He did not anticipate another attack, but as Alpha, it was Jackson's job to protect all within his borders in case one came. The first step in this process was to make sure that every pack member could defend themselves and others, regardless of age, gender, or role in the pack. Ready to join in, Jackson stripped off his shirt, ignoring the admiring looks of the women around him. Jackson had waited for his mate, unlike many Alphas, wanting nothing more than to experience the bond he had watched so many of his friends find. Some members of the pack had started to push him to accept a chosen mate, fearing the fate of the pack without a Luna, but both he and Loki swore that would never happen.  Before he could even shift to his lycan form Loki, he was approached by Travis, his lead guard. Tall and intimidating despite being older than many members of the pack, Travis commanded respect and ran the training with an eagle eye and a desire for perfection. The older shifter had raised Jackson alongside Marcus and his twin daughters, Makenzie and Makayla, teaching them the value of hard work and dedication, acting as more of a father to him than his own ever had. One glance at his face told Jackson that whatever the older man wanted was not going to improve his day.  "Alpha." Travis slightly lowered his head in submission before standing to meet Jackson's eyes. There was only the slightest hint of a smile when he stood, letting the Alpha know he was messing with him.  Groaning, he looked over at the field, checking out the progress of his warriors. "How many more times are you going to call me that? You changed my diapers, scolded me, and pulled me out of every scrape I got into as a boy. It's Jackson." The words came out as a rant, but Jackson knew that every word was nothing but the truth, and it bothered him to see Travis act as if he was somehow better than anyone else just because he had the title of Alpha.  Travis allowed his full grin to show as he stood before his Alpha. "I am fully aware, but it pisses you off, so I will keep doing it, and before you try to object, remember that I have taken you to the mat more times than I can count, and I would not hesitate to do it again if you need a reminder, lycan or no lycan." All signs of formality were abandoned as both men lost their composure, laughing together in the morning air.  Once they had calmed down, Travis started speaking again, his words causing Jackson's heart to lift before the implications caused his blood to run cold in his veins. "I received a call from the Kingdom this morning that made me realize that we need to talk." Desperate to delay whatever the bad news was, Jackson approached the situation with a guaranteed distraction. "How is Jacob doing?" Jackson asked, thinking about the adorable dark-haired son of Makenzie and Abe. Born a little over a month ago, he was the light of Travis's eye and had Jackson wrapped around his little finger. No matter what else was going on, nothing would stop Travis from talking about him with the slightest encouragement. A wide grin broke his face as the distraction worked as it was designed. "From the sounds of it, he is amazing, but that is not all. Makayla wanted to let me know that he will soon be having company. They are pregnant too."  Jackson did not know why he was so shocked, but he was. Makayla was one of the most calming people he had ever met and one of the most vicious fighters. If her family was threatened, she would make an amazing mom. Her mates, twin brothers Francis and Xavier, were advisors to the King and had joined their group seamlessly. They had been found beaten and chained by the Alpha of the Dauphin Pack. Not long after arriving at Blue Moon, Marcia had changed them to lycans. Each had been blessed by the Moon Goddess with a gift designed to help in the fight against those who had attempted to take the Queen. Francis was gifted with the ability to hear thoughts, and his brother was given the ability to read auras to discern a person's true intentions.  "Congratulations! I have to head to the Kingdom in a few days, and I can't wait to see them. Not to mention, I want to see how Makenzie is doing; I can't believe that Marcia succeeded in forcing her to take time off. She might be the Queen, but that is a miracle." They laughed together, thinking of the tireless warrior sitting at home. The Queen had not banned her from training, but she had requested that Makenzie sit out of direct battles until the baby was a little older. Having been raised in foster homes, Marcia would do anything in her power to ensure no pup was raised without their mother.    Knowing that he should not delay any further, Jackson decided to see what was going on. "From the tone of your voice, I know that there is more to this than you are saying; what can I help you with?" Even as he said the words, he could see the stress lines on the older shifter's face; there was more that he wanted to say.  "Because of this news, I wanted to talk to you. I am respectfully requesting retirement from my position at Blue Moon. It is time to shift my focus from the pack to the girls and now my grandchildren." His face was still as he waited for his Alpha's response to his request. Jackson fought not to let his panic show. Travis had served the pack for years and never requested anything from them. When he had lost his mate, he had brought his baby girls to training with him. While the idea of losing him hurt, it was not the issue that came to the forefront of Jackson's mind.  He had not found the person he wanted to fill the Gamma position, and now he was losing his trainer. "That is wonderful, Travis; I am thrilled for you. Do you have a timeframe you want to leave in?" Even he heard how fake the excitement in his voice was at these words.  "I would like to leave as soon as we determine my replacement. Would you have time to meet this morning after breakfast?" Jackson nodded before shifting his focus to the training field. He needed a moment before he could speak. Watching the warriors fight normally filled him with overwhelming pride, but today, he just felt empty. His pack was flourishing, but all those he loved were moving on with their lives while he felt stuck. As thrilled as he was to see his friends meeting their mates and finding new homes, he had never felt so alone.  Forcing a happy tone into his voice, he spoke again. "I always have time for you, come on up after training, and we can discuss logistics; I hope you have an idea for your replacement."  A small smile tilted the side of his face, "Oh, I do, Alpha, and I think it might help more than you think." Jackson sure hoped so.
