CHAPTER TWOPrincess Pauline was having her bath. At ten o’clock in the morning a maid drew the curtains of her bedroom on the first floor and she awoke in her small bed draped with pink embroidered muslin. In the adjoining room her African servant Paul prepared her bath. Like all the Bonapartes, Pauline had a mania for bathing and whenever possible she bathed in milk because she thought it improved her complexion and the texture of her skin. Her bathroom was small with a low ceiling and the bath itself stood in an alcove. Pauline would lie for a long time relaxing in the carefully heated water mixed with five gallons of milk.
