CHAPTER 2: Alpha Killian buried himself under the pile of paperwork on his desk but after a few hours, he was tired of going through and left his office. He went to the training room where he watched his bodyguards practice on treadmills, fighting rings, weight lifting, and sacks. It was a vast space with gym equipment and sweaty people. Gunshots can be heard close by and it's because the room beside this is a shooting range. "Alpha Killian, you requested for me?" Matthias, Alpha Killian's beta asked as soon as he was inches away from him. He followed Killian's eyes to the people training. "So I want to know how the new trainees are doing?" Killian said, still looking ahead. "They are doing great, even better than expected. They have a lot of zeal." Matthias responded and then pointed at five different people busy training. "They are the new trainees, two are at the shooting range. They are all around the age of 20 to 22." Killian carefully observed the five people Matthias had pointed out, he was impressed by their fast improvement and adaptability to everyone. "And they have been there for just two weeks?" He asked and Matthias nodded but Killian wasn't looking at him so he didn't see that. Killian suddenly stood in front of Matthias, Killian was a head taller and larger than Matthias. Killian has very broad shoulders and he can be mistaken for the beast in 'Beauty and the Beast' from behind. "What's this sudden intimidating?" Matthias asked, taking a few steps back. "Step back." He placed a hand in between them as he stepped back while Killian stepped closer to him. "I asked a question, why didn't you respond?" Killian growled. "Hush!" Matthias put his index finger in between his lips, "Don't start exerting your power over me. I know you well enough to not be frightened by you, but keep this up and others will become more scared of you and they won't even meet your eyes." Killian sighed, his frown didn't leave his face but Matthias was right and he couldn't do anything, definitely not to him, he turned back to the training scenery and focused his gaze there instead. "And I nodded in reply to what you asked." "Why did you nod, I wasn't looking at you." "Then next time, look at who you're talking to." Matthias hissed then turned away with his hands crossed around his chest. "This is why you're single. How will you find your mate with this attitude, you never meet my eyes and we have been friends for years." Killian turned and gave a quick glance at his beta then shook his head. "There's no use talking with you." Killian then walked away but Matthias was on his tail. "Go away!" Killian yelled but Matthias pretended he heard nothing and increased his pace and was soon by Killian's side, matching his strides. ***** "Next, number 46," Stella announced then took a deep breath and let it out. She was in an open office next to the CEO's. A chair was opposite her and Kenzie sat there after the announcement. "You are?" Stella asked while staring at her computer, she then proceeded to typing on her keyboard. "Kenzie Ziegler," Kenzie responded. "Resume?" Stella requested then Kenzie handed Stella a file titled Her Resume. Without looking at Kenzie, Stella took the file and then opened it. After glancing through it for ten seconds, Stella closed it back and returned to typing on her keyboard. "I see you were a police trainee." She began but her eyes were still on the screen of her computer. Her voice held no emotion at all so Kenzie couldn't decipher if the interview was going well or not or if the interviewer was impressed. "Yes," "Why did you stop, was it too difficult?" "Oh no, that's not why." Kenzie chuckled then shifted uncomfortably on the chair. She tried to come up with something impressive to say quickly, "I wanted to be a police officer to protect them but I realized recently that police aren't doing that. Being a bodyguard and staying close to them is how you'll keep them safe." She lied. "So your motivation for applying here is because you want to protect people," Stella repeated disinterestedly, Kenzie sensed it and panic gripped her heart but she maintained her composure. "Yes. I've received training on shooting, and boxing, and I've remained fit so the company doesn't have to spend a lot of money training me. I came with a plus." "Alright, we will get back to you," Stella said dismissively, "Please call the next person after you." She requested. "Uh, I was the last person." "Alright, you may go." Kenzie hesitantly got up, she wondered if there was anything she could do to change how the interview went but for some reason, Kenzie believed the interviewer wasn't even interested in her in the first place. Kenzie had no other choice but to leave, her head was down as she already guessed her failure but as she took a few steps forward, her head bumped into a wall and she stumbled backward and fell to the ground on her butt. She remembers there was no wall there and guessed she bumped into someone, she looked up and glared up at whoever it was. She found a towering man in front of her, he was huge and muscular. His size scared her, she knew it would take a lot for her to take down that man. She remained silent and stood up, averting her eyes from him. "It must have been an accident, it happens and it's no one's fault. I'll excuse myself." Kenzie walked out, leaving a stunned Killian whose eyes followed her until she left the building. "Mate." He whispered but Stella and Matthias cut it. Kenzie rushed back to her Camry and drove off, she was certain she would receive a rejection text later that night but she didn't expect the message she read when her phone buzzed with a new text message. Dear applicant, We are sorry to inform you that you did not pass the interview. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Kenzie was very displeased when she read those words, she hadn't even gotten far. This isn't what companies usually do, the quick rejection ignited a little suspicion about the company and she thought hard about the interviewer's behavior. She realized that the interviewer never looked at her once. Kenzie made a U-turn and drove back to the agency. She decided needs to go to the CEO instead of the secretary. While in the elevator to the seventh floor, she strategizes how she'll impress the CEO there. A ding brings her back to reality and the door of the elevator opens up. She took a deep breath and then stepped out, she was prepared to run into his office when she wasn't looking but fortunately for Kenzie, she wasn't on her desk. She looked around the area to see if she was close by but she wasn't, Kenzie took the opportunity and went straight into the CEO's office. She went in without knocking and closed the door behind her. Killian, who had his head buried inside his palms, looked up immediately. "What do you think you are doing?" Killian shouted. Kenzie realized it was the man she bumped into. "Hi, my name is Kenzie Ziegler. You saw me earlier, I was one of the applicants getting interviewed this morning." She introduced herself. "That doesn't answer my question." Killian barked, he was taken aback by the sudden intrusion but most importantly, he was wary of the sudden emotions he felt and was trying to keep his anxious wolf at bay. "Alright, alright." Kenzie tried to calm him down, "Please calm down. I understand my behavior right now isn't pleasing but I have to do this for my dream." "What are you on about?" "What I mean is, you can't just reject me like this. I feel like I wasn't given a chance to show my skills. Ily a plus, I studied at a police academy and have been training diligently." She hyped herself again. "Reject, didn't you just have the interview?" Killian asked with a furrowed brow. That was all Kenzie needed to know that her interview was weird. "Ah! I knew it was strange! I received a rejection text right after the interview, I guess it was a mistake." "We don't make mistakes, if you receive a rejection text then it means you're no longer a candidate. Please be respectful and accept the decision made." Killian said dismissively. His words made her recall the conversation she had with her grandfather, she made a deal to get this job and infiltrate his business, she can't let nepotism ruin this for her. "To be honest, you didn't even want to give any of us a chance in the first place because why would you be deciding who would work as a bodyguard behind a desk?" As she spoke, she realized how strange everything about the interview was and the more determined she was to find out what was going on and not because of the condition she was given. "Our abilities weren't even tested. This agency is the only one that does that. That's so unfair." Kenzie is a very athletic person so she was confident she would be able to secure a position because she was very confident about her abilities. "If it's unfair then go to a fair agency and have your needs met," Killian said, his voice unwavering and a growl escaped his lips.
