Chapter 2

245 Words
The Uhaul pulled out if the driveway. It took the movers half an hour to pack almost our entire lives into the back of the truck. With the last few odds and ends in the trunk of our SUV, Aiden and I loaded up and got ready to leave.  With one last look at the old house before I got behind the wheel, I expected to feel some kind of sadness. Show some sign that I would miss the place but instead, I got something else... An old familiar feeling. Excitement maybe? I smiled as I climbed in and realized what the feeling was.  The fog was lifting. Finally.  We pulled out of the driveway without looking back. We headed out on our 12-hour drive to start over. Start our new lives in Loveland.  Aiden turned the radio to our favorite station. I saw the smile slowly grow on his face. I knew then this was definitely the right decision.  I left behind 31 years of living in Franklin springs. 10 years of hell stuck in a loveless marriage. I made the decision to leave for both me and my son. He could start over too. I hoped he would make new friends. Come out of his shell.  Later... As we passed the now leaving Georgia sign at the South Carolina border I smiled. Not knowing what to expect. But knowing it had to be better than this. I would find happiness for both of us if it killed me.
