Something strange was happening in her classes and Kelly wasn’t sure what to make of it. The first week of school was finally concluding and she was certain there was something everyone was not telling her. Like a weird secret everyone whispered behind her back but which involved her. Not that she had seen people whispering or anything like that.
The thing was, starting Wednesday morning all her seats had changed in every single class. She no longer had the least wanted seats in the class rooms. Every class she had entered she had found her previous seat occupied and a new one in a much better position waiting for her.
None of the students that took her previous seats answered her question as to why they suddenly decided to change seats but she had a theory it had something to do with the three boys Suzy kept warning her about.
Her theory had not sprouted from thin air, it had begun to form when she realized that her new seats would always be next to one of the boys if they so happened to share a class. She was yet to speak to either of them, but at least she had gotten to know their names.
Callum Stone was the boy with the topaz-gold eyes. The other two were Oscar Dove and Mattias Park. Oscar was the smaller built of the three with long brown hair and gray eyes. Mattias was just as big as Callum, he had shorter hair than the three which had a distinct reddish-brown color. His blue eyes watched her like a hawk every time she saw him, they all did.
She had chemistry and advanced math with Callum, she had actually been shocked to hear he was pretty smart. On first appearance she had assumed the three boys were part of a gang and had expected them to be nothing but handsome empty heads that bullied everyone in school. Now she realized she had been too quick to judge a book by its cover. Although she suspected they did bully people in school regardless of their intelligence.
Oscar was in her accounts class and physics. Mattias shocked an entire class by showing up in her biology class and informing the teacher that he was switching classes. He was also in her IT class.
Kelly found herself being watched by one boy or the other throughout her school day. And during lunch, the boys all sat together at a table no other person dared approach and watched her intently. It was unsettling and beginning to eat at her nerves.
Suzy did not look too pleased by these developments, either. She continued to hang around with Kelly during breaks, before and after classes but her attitude had turned rather cold. Although Kelly did not think much of it considering she had only known the girl less than a week.
When the bell finally signaled the end of the day on Friday, Kelly was more than happy to leave the school grounds and head home. But as she walked out of the building that housed her classes, she paused and bit her lip.
The idea of going home did not hold a lot of excitement, she looked at her wrist watch and groaned. It was only four thirty and she knew Stefanie would be home when she got there. The idea of being alone with the woman without her father around to distract his wife made her stomach turn.
“You’re running home already?” a deep voice asked behind her and startled her.
“Jesus!” she exclaimed and turned around to see who it was. The most captivating golden eyes were looking at her and smiling.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I thought you heard me approaching.”
He was still smiling and Kelly was drowning in the smile. At the back of her mind, she was aware that she had not yet responded to his question or statement, but she could not get her mouth and brain to work at that moment in time. Even though she had seen him up close during class, looking at him this closely was still an assault on her senses. His mouth relaxed in a smile transformed his face from intimidating to mesmerizing.
Callum began to frown; he was not sure how to react to her silence. He had finally managed to get her alone and start a conversation. He was not sure what he had anticipated, but the puzzled awed look on her face and silence was not it.
“Uhm…is there a problem?” he asked.
Some brain cells finally snapped and she quickly answered, “Yes.” Then she realized what his last question had been and quickly opened her mouth again. “I mean no.”
Callum looked at her confused, she didn’t blame him, she was also very confused and was aware her words were not making sense.
She took a deep breath and looked at him and tried again. “I mean, yes…I am heading home and no…there is no problem.” She gave him a shy smile and looked away. Could the ground open and swallow her before she embarrassed herself further?
Callum could catch her mood in her scent, she was shy and embarrassed but what he liked most was just her sweet natural scent that spoke to him and his wolf and he was drowning in it. He took a deep breath and swallowed the groan that rose in his throat and cleared his throat.
“Great. Well, I was wondering if maybe you would be interested in grabbing something to eat before you head home.” The idea had just popped in his head and he let it out without second thought. He had to spend some time with her otherwise he had no idea how he was supposed to get his mate to fall in love with him.
She looked surprised and apprehensive. Callum didn’t know what to say to put her at ease. They had never spoken before now and his invitation must seem strange but he really wanted to spend some time with her or his wolf would go crazy.
Suddenly an idea popped in his head and he continued. “It won’t just be me. I mean…would you like to join me and my friends and grab something to eat?”
Kelly wasn’t sure if that made it worse or better. A guy she knew nothing about was inviting her to hang out together with his two other friends. As far as self-preservation and security went, it was a bad idea. Especially considering how everyone seemed to give the three guys a wide berth at all times.
But when she looked at him, she felt calm and somehow knew she would be safe with him. Plus, she really did not want to head home just yet. After a few more seconds of weighing the options, she gave him a small smile and answered, “Sure, why not.”
Callum was excited and smiled wide. If he had been alone, he would have howled to the sky. He quickly gestured with his hand in the direction of the carpark.
“Is pizza ok for you?”
“Yaa, pizza is fine.”
They approached the carpark where she saw his two friends waiting by a black Jeep Cherokee. They were deep in conversation and had yet to notice them.
“I have been wondering who the beautiful car belonged to,” she commented with another shy smile. She was a girl who liked nice cars but not obsessed with the details like most guys were.
Callum chuckled softly. “It caught your eye, huh?”
“Definitely, it’s kind of hard to miss it.”
Before Callum could respond, Mattias’ voice cut across the remaining distance and reached them. The guy had his back to Callum but had already scented him so he spoke without turning to check who else was there.
“Cal, what took you so long? Were you brushing your tail or something…?” Oscar who had a perfect view of who was standing next to Callum suddenly gave Mattias a hard slap to the back of his head.
“What the hell!” Mattias exclaimed and turned, then his eyes widened. “Oh, shit.”
“Shut it, Mattias,” Oscar muttered in a low voice only loud enough for his ears.
Callum quickly jumped in and spoke before someone else made an inappropriate statement as he was sure would happen if he gave them a few more seconds. “Kelly is joining us for our pizza outing,” he announced.
Mattias was about to stupidly ask which pizza outing Callum was talking about considering they hadn’t had any plans on going out to grab any but the look Oscar and Callum shot him told him to keep his mouth shut or they would make sure he paid for it later.
It was almost laughable considering he was growing into a capable enforcer and could easily take on Oscar, but Callum was a challenge and if they came at him together, they would certainly beat his ass. He swallowed and gave a small nod to indicate he had gotten the message.
Callum breathed a sigh of relief. If Mattias kept his mouth shut they would have a better chance of having a pleasant outing with Kelly without messing everything up.
He turned and gave her a smile and waved a hand to the car. “Want to check out the inside of the beautiful car?”
Kelly chuckled; she had watched the exchange between the guys with pure confusion. She had no idea what had actually been communicated among them, but she was certain some secret message had passed after the weird comment Mattias had made.
But now she looked at Callum’s smiling face and felt at ease again. “Of course, how else would I get to the pizza place? Can’t ride on the roof of the car.”
All three boys stopped and looked at her. Mattias was the first to react and he burst out laughing. Soon enough everyone was laughing.
Of course, Mattias just had to add something to the moment. “Oh, man... Callum, your mate is so funny.” The laughter suddenly died.
