Callum fought his wolf for control. The beast was beyond agitated and it made him tense and grumpy to say the least. The deep breaths he took seemed to do little to calm him and he could tell he was now worrying his mate. That was not his intent.
Her voice was small and cautious when she asked again, “Callum, are you ok?”
His head came down suddenly and he looked at her. When she flinched and blinked in shock, he realized his eyes must have glowed with his wolf. He quickly closed them and looked away for a moment.
When he was certain he had better control, he opened them again and looked at her.
She hadn’t moved away. Her hand was still on his arm. Despite her obvious apprehension, she still felt compelled to stay right where she was.
“What happened last night?” he finally asked.
Kelly blinked again. She couldn’t believe all this was because she hadn’t picked his calls. “You are upset because I didn’t pick your call? Is that it?” she asked.
Callum shook his head. “No, I am upset because a handsome young man was with you last night.”
“Wah…?”
“I heard the introduction,” he told her in a hard voice, his wolf was dangerously close to the surface. “Who was he?”
She studied him a few seconds in silence. Very calmly she responded, “Your hearing is obviously not that great over the phone. If you had heard better…you would have heard the part about him being my step brother. Stefanie’s son.”
Callum seemed to process her words a moment. “Was he handsome?”
“His mother seemed to think so,” she responded with a smile. Callum did not find anything amusing enough to smile about. Neither did his wolf who was already imagining tearing the step brother into so many pieces handsome would be the very last description anyone would ever think to give.
Kelly chuckled as though she could read his thoughts and started walking. He fell in step beside her but kept quiet.
“If I didn’t know better, I would say you are jealous.”
Callum didn’t miss a beat. There was no point going around the matter. Waiting for his mate to fall for him was driving him crazy already. “Jealous does not begin to describe it. And I prefer the word ‘possessive’.”
“Easy alpha,” Callum heard Oscar whisper somewhere near by. His two friends were close but out of sight. That was expected, they would never leave him unprotected and alone no matter what. Callum ignored his beta’s advise and focused on Kelly.
His mate had stopped walking and was starting at him now. “Am I your girlfriend?” she asked slowly with a raised brow.
He took a second to consider his response. He had not planned to do it this way but that horse had already left the barn. There was no point trying to close the stable door now. “You are more than that. But put simply…yes, you are my girlfriend.”
Callum heard Oscar and Mattias curse under their breaths. They obviously did not approve of his methods. It was definitely not what they had advised him to do.
Kelly stared at him then tilted her head in amusement. “You never asked me to be your girlfriend.”
Callum smiled, he now had reason to smile. “Yet you do not seem shocked or angry by my declaration.” He wondered if she too felt the pull between them, the need to be together as fate had designed.
A small shrug dislodged the bag strap from her shoulder. Callum quickly grabbed for it and effortlessly carried it for her.
She was smiling again. “What girl wouldn’t want such a gentleman for a boyfriend,” she teased and resumed walking.
They walked the rest of the way into the classroom block. Callum only left her when they reached her class and she went it. They did not say anything else. For now, her agreement to be his girlfriend was enough to calm his wolf.
Feeling calmer and back to normal, he stepped back outside the building and found his friends at the side of the building where they had been waiting.
“I can’t believe that didn’t blow up in your face,” Oscar commented the moment he reached them.
Mattias just shook his head and kept his eyes looking around. His wolf was a little unsettled but he didn’t why. He scanned the area with his eyes and even took a sniff of the air but nothing stood out.
More inclined to trust his wolf more than his own judgement, Mattias turned to his friends. “How about we continue this conversation some other place?”
Callum became instantly alert and looked around. “What is it?”
“Not sure, but my wolf doesn’t like it.”
Oscar stepped away from the wall he had been leaning on. “The beasts always know better. Let’s go.”
Agreed, they all left the side of the building and walked towards their classes. Whatever was going on had to wait. They had classes to attend.
In the distance the trees that formed a boundary around the school swayed as someone jumped down from a branch. They had been too far to hear anything, a necessity to avoid their scent being caught by the three boys.
However, it had been close enough to see that the young alpha had found a female interest. That was not good news. The person walked away from the trees and left the school grounds.
Their mind was consumed with anger. The young alpha developing interest in the female was not part of the plan. Much worse if it turned out to be a fated mate.
The person walked quietly back to the car they had parked in a hidden spot before walking onto the school ground. A curse left their lips as they kicked the car in anger. The force of the kick rocked the car but it did nothing to calm the person.
Plans had to be adjusted before everything they had worked for came to nothing all because of a human girl. A malicious smile crossed the person’s face as they thought of how to take care of the problem.
