Chapter 5 A sullen cloud loomed in the back of the pickup’s cab and swirled around Rafael. Chad’s gaze momentarily darted to the rearview mirror, quickly studying the reflection of his reluctant passenger. There had been a disagreement with the nurse about being wheeled out in a wheelchair—hospital protocol, she said—and a few curse words slipped out in the process of getting him in the backseat. Rafael sat sideways, his bum leg resting on the seat. He tried to think of something to say to break through the gloomy fog, but wasn’t sure where to start.
