3 years later.

"Alyssa, wake up. Time for school." I heard my Nana say next to my ear.

"Nana, little more time." I whine.

"Honey, its your 1st day of your freshman year." She said to me.

I groan for a moment then stretched before rolling over and looking at her. I smiled at her until my eyes flicked over to someone behind her. It was the chief.

A little over a year ago the chief and her got married and it was so wonderful how it all went.

He was holding a tray in his hands as he stood in the door way. I sat up in my bed as he walked over to me and sat it on my lap.

"Happy birthday Aly!" He said all excitedly.

I looked up at him, with tears in my eyes that were forming. He made me breakfast in bed for my birthday and it was very sweet. Even though he used my nickname, that I only let a few call me that but I let him. Even though my gramps was the one that came up with it.

"Awe, thanks chief. You shouldn't have, I would have eaten at school." I said. "Oh, god school. Do I have to go to school on my birthday?" I had asked.

"Yes, yes you do." My Nana had said.

"But after school, we'll be picking you up and taking you out to dinner with Kyle and his mom."

"Fine." I said as I ate my food and they left me be.

When I lifted up the lid, it had French toast, eggs, sausage, and OJ. I was in heaven right now. The best breakfast for my birthday.

After I was done, I had set the tray on my dresser then walked into bathroom to take a shower. Thank god my bedroom had my own bathroom.

After the first few months of Nana and chief dating, he had asked us to move in with him. I was a little off about it then when I saw everything. The place was huge it was like 3 times bigger than our little house. But I loved it.

But today of all days was my 13th birthday and I had school. When I had shaved everything, washed my hair and body, I got out to dry. When I wrapped a towel around my body, I went to my closet to find me my favorite skinny jeans and my bright neon pink tank top with a couple of dolphins into a heart, and my black flats. When I blow dried my hair to make it straight.

Once I was all done and ready to go, I grabbed my school bag and headed downstairs to the kitchen with the tray in my hands. I set it on the counter then headed into the living room where I saw both the chief and Nana sitting on the couch watching shows.

"Thank you for breakfast, I loved it. And I'll see y'all after school." I said as I headed outside to catch the bus.

Kyle was standing in front of the house with something in his hands. I smiled at him when I saw it was a wrapped gift with a bow on it.

I walked over to him with all smiles, until I was in front of him. He handed me the present with a smile then nodded. I smiled back at him then opened up my present.

When I opened it, it was a long rectangle box. I looked up at him for a second then looked back down. I opened up the box and it was a jewelry box set. There was a necklace of a mermaid charm. It was pretty and I was in love with it. Then there was a bracelet of a few charms on it, sea creatures then a pair of dolphin earrings.

When I looked back up at him, I had tears in my eyes. I closed the lid then hugged him with some much love in it.

"Happy birthday, Alyssa."

"Thank you, Kyle. But you didn't have to get me anything."

"I know but your my best friend since birth. I had to, plus my mother had helped me get them. I thought of the set when I saw them." He told me. "There was a moon ring that went with it but someone took it before we got there."

"No, its fine. This been the best birthday so far." I told him, as I put the box in my school bag right when the bus came.

We got on the bus and sat in the back of the bus so we can be alone. It was still a little early for me being up. I sat next to the window so I could lay my head on it and he sat on the other side of me.

As I did fall asleep, I had dreamt of the water, like I was swimming with all the sea creatures that were on my bracelet. As I was middle of swimming, I saw a human or something I thought until it got close to me. It was half human, or at least the top half was. The bottom half had a fish tail, but not just any fish tail. It was a mermaid and she was very pretty.

What got me, she looked like my mother. Like the statue that was in town that everyone worships over. She got close to me and touched me and I felt comfortable with her for some reason.

"One day, my child. One day we'll be together." She told me.

I was all confused. I jerked up to Kyle shaking my shoulder to get me up. We were at school already.

When the bus stopped, we got off and headed to our first class. Kyle and I had every class together, but one. He had gym where I had choir. But before that we had lunch together. I was happy for that.

As out classes went by fast, it was just checking us in for the class and getting our seating arrangements. But me and him sat next to each other in every class we had.

By the time lunch had came, we went and got our food of our choice and went tonight us a table to sit at. We found a few friends that we had talked to in some of our classes, when they saw us, they came to our table, sat and ate our food.

When I was done eating, I leaned my head against Kyle's shoulder while still talking.

"Hey, are you two a thing?" One of the guys asked.

"No, why?" I asked.

"Well just wondering since the way your all leaning on him like that." He asked.

"Oh no, we're just best friends. Like brother and sister. He's been there for me since birth." I had said.

The guy nodded then looked at Kyle. I felt his body tense up a little bit didn't think of it.

"Hey, my Nana and chief is picking me up after school for tonight." I had said.

"Yea, for your birthday. I know, my mother is picking me up too."

"Wait, chief? Your the chief's granddaughter ain't you?" One of the girls asked.

"Yes and no. He's my step grandfather."

"But still, that's gotta be cool. To be related to him. Through marriage at least." She said.

"My mothers had a crush on him for years." Another girl said.

"Mine too." The one guy from earlier.

"It has its perks. Apparently he's had a crush on my Nana for years since my gramps passed away. Maybe even before that." I said as the bell rung.

After lunch, we all went back to our classes.

As the time had flew passed, it was time to go. When Kyle and I walked out of the school, we saw our rides. Kyle got into his mothers car and I got into the chiefs jeep.

We drove out and headed out into town, closer inland, where there was a better town away from the water. As well got to the restaurant, we gotten our seats and all ordered our food.

As well ate our food, a older gentleman came by and stood in front of us.

"I heard we have a birthday girl here with us tonight." He said.

I looked at everyone and they all smiled.

"We do, our granddaughter." My Nana had said as she looked at me.

I smiled and I could feel myself blushing some.

"Well, we have a little surprise for you tonight." He said ad he waved some people over to us.

When they got to us, I saw a cake with a mermaid on it as the candle. It was gorgeous and I loved it. As they sung happy birthday to me, everyone clapped their hands and I blew out the candle.

My wish was that I wanted to know where my mother was. I wanted to know the truth one day.

After that we all ate the cake. And just as much as it looked good, it tasted good as well. I guess what they say; its as good as it looks, it correct.

When we was done, my Nana had handed me a small box wrapped up. When I started opening it, I looked at her then opened. When I opened it, it was a moon ring that matched the set that Kyle got me this morning.

"Kyle, its the ring you were talking about." I said as I showed him.

"So your the people that came and bought it before we got there." Kyle's mother had said smiling.

"Yeah, we didn't have enough for the whole set." The chief said.

"Nor did we but they gave us a good enough discount since the ring was gone." His mother said.

"I thank all of you guys for the set. Its beautiful." I said as I hugged the chief and Kyle since they were close to me in the booth.

Today and tonight was the best birthday. I thought I would never have a great birthday since gramps but I tried. For Nana at least I did. But today it tops it all.
