Today was the day, of the spring activities of the village. The chief or mayor, some people call him either or, made this day for my grandfather when he found out he had stage-3 cancer when I was 5 and I loved this day. Well me being a little girl I didn't know no better and didn't know what was going on. My grandfather was best friends with the mayor, they went to school together in the states. When I explain that to people they are like, you know were part of the states too right. But like I said me being the little girl, I tried to be cute and think I knew everything. I would say no, we're the islands the not states. But they went to school in Seattle, Washington, which was kinda far away. I was with my Nana in town doing a little shopping to help with the cookout that is being held tonight at the lake, like everyone cooks at least one of two things there but my Nana she loves to cook and bake. She's bringing her famous, mix berry pie and apple honey bbq glaze pull pork and chicken breast tenders. Everyone asks her what is apple honey bbq glaze? She just tells them its a homemade secret sauce. But they love it. Expressly it took almost all day to cook the pull pork. As she was doing the cooking, I rode my scooter to the lake, that she bought me awhile back so I can get across the islands in good time, expressly for school, I took some stuff over there that was ready, while she's doing the last bite of cooking. When I got there, I saw Kyle. He was somewhat, kinda sorta, my best friend in the whole world. We're the same age by a few months difference. I'm older though. "Kyle!" I yelled out when I pulled up to the lake. "Alyssa, hey. I was wondering if you were gonna show up?" He asked smiling. "We'll yea, its my grandfather's thing. Why wouldn't I?" I asked. "Well I haven't seen you in awhile, that's all." "Oh, well Nana been taking it hard for this day, since this when he passed. But she's getting it all ready though. Your mother stopped by to help her." I said. "Yea, she said she was. Everyone knows how hard today is for Nana Rose." I looked down for a second. "Yep, when we went to the store, some of the villagers were staring at us. Probably seeing of she break, but you know she never does. He was a good man." I said. Kyle nodded as he helped grabbed what was in my side basket. When he was done, I saw the chief coming over to me. "Hey Alyssa, is Rose okay?" She asked me. "Yea, she's middle of coming the food. She sent me away to bring some of this stuff. Why, what's up?" "Well I saw you but didn't see her. I thought because of today she wasn't coming." "Oh no, she's coming. You know how long it takes her pull pork to cook." "Yea, I know. I just hope she's okay that's all. Your Nana has done a lot for us since George, you know." The chief said. I nodded at him then smiled when I saw someone pulling up. I pointed behind him and him and Kyle looked. Insane the chief's face lit up with joy. They would be cute together, if they dated. I mean he worries about her all the time expressly around this time of year. Even the date when my parents had left us as well. I mean he is the mayor, so why wouldn't he. Right? He walked away from us and helped my Nana she smiled when she saw him and it was just adorable. Kyle looked at me then at them then back. He snapped his fingers at me. "Earth to Alyssa, what's going on in that head of yours?" "Nothing, its just. Its cute how they both cheer up and smile when they are around each other. The mayor is single still right?" I asked him. "Yeah, I think so. Why? What are you thinking?" "That they both date, you know. Gramps has been gone for 5 years now. I know I'm 10 years old, but they are cute. And I wanna see my Nana happy again." "I can talk to my mother for you, I know she'll probably help. Expressly to get a chance to get away from my dad half the time." He laughed. "He driving her insane again." "Yes, since he broke his leg from falling off the house." We both laughed at that. After we laughed, we went to dig in some of the awesome food that was around. Everyone enjoyed themselves, laughed, cried from laughing so much. They spread some good words around about gramps and it was great to hear the things, that we hear the same about every single year. I got up from my chair that I was sitting next to Kyle with and headed to the middle by the picture frame of my gramps. I looked at it for a moment then touched it. "I miss you gramps. But Nana needs to move on." I told the picture then turned around. I took a deep breath then spoke loud and clear. "Excuse me everyone, I have a few things to say." I started off. Everyone look at me and got quiet. "I thank you all for coming out today, for my gramps. I know it is hard on me and my Nana but we handle it with pride." Everyone cheered and done our Hawaiian call. Well the men did at least. "But what I'm about to say is coming from the heart," I said as I look at Kyle then my Nana. "And it may hurt but its the truth. When my parents had died, I had no one but my grandparents. My gramps was the world to me and he done everything for me. I may not know a lot about him but as I hear all speak about him every single year, I know he was a good man. When I was 5, right before he passed away, he took me to this very spot and threw me in the lake." I said as I turned around and looked at the lake. "He said, you have to move your arms and legs my Aly. Be a frog move them to the side at the same time. It was so confusing at the time. When I gave up and almost when under her had saved me and held me close." I said as I wrapped my arms around me and turned around and looked back at me people. "When he got swam us to the dock, he held me for dear life and said I'll never let you go. Your stuck with me kid." I started to tear up a little. I whipped the tear away and went on. "After that, he got up and threw me back in the lake like an i***t and said now try it again and try doggy paddle." I said laughing. Everyone laughed as well. "We stayed here that day what seem like forever until I got it right. And heck, I love the water. You can't get me out of it. But that day, I heard my Nana cry from what he has told her, broke my heart just a little. I didn't know what was going on until the day that the chief came to the preschool and picked me up and ran me to the house. When I saw everyone there, I knew something was going on and that once I saw my Nana on the floor crying next to gramps on the bed, I just knew he was gone. That day, we lost the best person we could have ever had beside my parents." I said as I raised up my arm with my cup of juice and everyone had done the same. "This is for you gramps." I had said. Everyone mocked me and it felt so good it get some of that off of me. My Nana was about to get up until I put my hand up and stopped her. Everyone looked at her then me. "Nana, I know you've lost the best person in the world and this is gonna sound hurtful and I am sorry. But its been 5 years and I want to see you happy again. I want you to be happy again. Please, for me fine someone that makes you happy." I said as I looked at the chief and I saw her look at him and he done the same. I saw they both smiled and saw she was blushing. "Gramps would have wanted you to move on and live your life. And saying this not just for me, but for everyone, we're all family here and everyone cares for another. I love you so very much, Nana." I told her then ran over to her and hugged her. I started to tear up again and I knew she was too. But she kept it in. She wasn't one to show emotions a lot, but when she did, you just had to be there for her. I am sorry if any of this made you cry BC I know it made me tear up some. I spoke from the heart BC I was the same age Alyssa was when she lost her gramps. Only if my Nana was alive, I would probably said the same thing to her. Stay tune to what happens next in the "The Human of the Sea".
