Momentarily stunned by John's sudden departure. Kimberli's feet felt as if they had sprouted roots, anchoring her to the ground. Immobilized, she watched as he disappeared from her sight.

She had stood up to him, her personal bully, she should have felt triumphant. Then why did her heart feel as though it was breaking? Without her brain's consent, her legs moved on their own authority. Her body urged her to correct the mistake that her foolish mouth had made. Taking off in a dead run, she thought she could catch up to him. Yet, the speed of his gait made her delayed start an ineffective attempt. She rounded the corner of the house, just in time to see him speed off in his car at a breakneck rate.
