Causing Guilt

1390 Words

A scream built in Lara’s throat but pure terror wouldn’t allow her to release it. With its teeth bared in a silent growl, the wolf stepped toward her, and though she’d been frozen in fear seconds earlier, Lara’s instincts had her stepping to the left. Hating to take her eyes off of him but knowing she needed to, Lara turned her head and reached for the largest handle protruding from the knife block on the counter. The whole thing tipped over as she yanked the kitchen knife out clumsily. Lara’s breaths were shaky and she choked on her sobs as she held the knife in front of her, the blade trembling with her hands as she looked at her mate’s wolf form. Jackson whimpered and stepped back, his eyes swimming with hurt, and if he hadn’t hit her, Lara might have felt a flicker of pity or guilt.
