Chapter 1
"Mom, I think this dress would be just nice for Elise's wedding" I looked up at my mother, raising the pale blue dress above me, so she can see it clearly. Well, of course, she can see it from a mile away but still, I did that." What do you think?" I asked, peeping at the side of the dress to see her facial reaction.
My mother narrowed her beautiful eyes on the dress and pretended to really weigh her decision, "You would look stunning in any dress, sweetheart" She said, nodding her head at the dress in approval, "Go for it. I think you should let your hair down for that dress" She advised.
I brought the dress lower and smiled down at it, "Yeah, I was thinking about that too" I agreed. She was right like always, I will look better if I let my hair down for this dress. My mother is good at fashion more than me and I have already admitted that publicly to my family a few years ago.
I am not someone who spends a lot of time picking a dress. Whatever that will cover me and won't bother me when I move is more than enough for me.
I was pulled out from my train of thoughts when I heard my mother exhale sharply, "Little Elise is getting married. Gosh, I wish you would get married too" She said, looking wistfully at the dress now, "I would make sure to make it as the grandest wedding of the decade," She said, nodding her head to herself.
As if she was making a promise to herself.
I resisted the urge to scowl at her. I hate it when she brings this subject up but not wanting to initiate an argument, I decided to change the subject, "Grander than the King's wedding?" I asked, looking at her in disbelief.
She frowned, the corners of her lips turning downwards in an attractive way, "Well, of course, we are no match for him, but we can try" She said, shrugging.
I chuckled softly at her persistence." I don't think I am ready for a relationship, mom. It requires a lot of commitment and I have other important things to take care of" I repeated to her what I have been telling since I turned twenty-one.
My mother has always been a feminist. She would support me to chase after my dreams. She will be there for me, I need a hand to lift me up, no matter when and where. But since everyone my age has been finding their mates recently, she hopes I would find mine soon too.
And it was starting to get on my nerves.
"Sush, don't say that. You could meet your mate at the wedding" She scolded, "If you did your father would be the happiest man alive. He will literally make an announcement to the whole world-"
"Alright, I get it. Let's stop it right there" I interrupted her abruptly, "I don't want to find my mate now, and I hope I don't find him at the wedding. If anyone else is getting married, I would even bother going, but this is Elise's wedding and I don't want to miss it" I said everything in one breath, "So please, don't make me change my mind, mom" I added after pausing to catch some breath.
"Change your mind in finding a mate or-"
"Changing my mind if I should just spend the weekend here in this house while all of you attend the Royal wedding" I snapped.
My mother didn't look like she was happy with my temper, but she closed her mouth shut. After all, she was like me once in her life, so she can't blame for being hard-headed and goal-oriented.
"I didn't mean to snap, mom," I said, regretting that I raised my voice on her, "I just want to make things crystal clear between us. I want to do something for our community. Something good like you did and until then, I can't settle down with a mate"
My mother's eyes hardened, "I am happy that you want to do good for us, but it is my duty to remind you that having a mate will never stop you from achieving anything" She said, "Your father was at my side when we defeated the vampires" She reminded me.
Ah, the vampires. I did see a few of them when I went out to the human neighborhood the other day, "But you come up with the plan by yourself right, mom? Dad was not supportive of you at first"
My mother was glaring at me now, "Just because he was like that in the beginning it doesn't guarantee your mate will be like that too. Maybe he will help you to achieve your goals from day one" She argued back.
I bit my lower lip, not knowing how to respond to that. She was right. My mate might be a very understanding and supportive man, but the problem is, I don't want to drag him into the mess that I am in right now.
"Okay, let's not keep arguing, okay?" I said, slumping my shoulders in defeat, "I hate it when I have to argue with you"
"Then don't" My mother replied coolly.
I wish it was that easy mom.
"I have to pack, so I have to go now. Do me a favor and check on your brothers on what they have picked out for the wedding" She said, walking away from me, "They always have a bad sense of fashion. Just like you. I wonder how you guys are even my kids..." She muttered as she climbed up the stairs.
I shook my head at her retreating figure and trudged towards Kyle's room, but he wasn't in there. Scowling, I made my towards Jasper's room then, but he wasn't there as well, so I sighed and stepped out of the house to go for a run.
To shrug off some tension. This is what I do whenever my mood gets messed up. I made mental note to check on my brothers later. Being their elder sister always made me the responsible one, but I didn't care. I loved taking care of them since they were small.
The moment I stepped out of the house, I sprang to the air and in the middle, I phase into my wolf form, landing on all fours with a thud on the ground. I stretched, giving my form a little warm-up before lurching towards the woods where I always find solace whenever I needed it.
On my way, I met some of my pack members here and there. They waved at me as I passed, and I nodded my huge head in acknowledgment.
Black Alder has always been a small pack since the start. My father told me about how vampires destroyed his pack when he was only a child and how the weight of an Alpha fell on his shoulders.
He said those were the darkest days of his life until he met my mom, Irina.
Of course, they didn't hit it off at the beginning, but they made progress, and here I am, a result of their trust and love for each other.
It took me only a few minutes to run past the pack borders and no one questioned me when I did. There are no other packs for miles from Black Alder and that gave us a little freedom to run further than we were allowed to. But still, it was risky, and my father doesn't really approve of it.
It took me months to convince him to let me run this far. He knew what I was capable of and unwilling he agreed, knowing I would be persistent.
Just like my mother.
I took a left, flying through the forest towards my secret spot, ignoring the prints I was leaving behind me. No one is going to see me here and even if they did, I will be able to get away from them.
I came to a halt in the middle of the forest when I smelt something stinking in the forest. I raised my nose up, in the end, took a whiff, my nose flaring in resentment when I recognized to which creature that this smell belonged.
I became alert and scanned the area quickly, trying to if any bloodsucker lurking in the mystical forest, but I couldn't find any, but my instincts were screaming at me, that at least two vampires are here now.
"Ah s**t" I heard someone say from above, "I was trying to hide!"
I snapped my head up, my eyes moving wildly, and I bared my teeth in warning when I saw one of them sitting on a tree branch, "I see you have developed your potential since the last time we met. You have Alpha blood in your blood after all" He continued, looking down at me in interest.
This wasn't the first time I am meeting this vile creature. I came across him many times, but I failed to catch him every time. It was truly frustrating. I never told about him to my father because I knew if I did, he will never let me out again.
No matter how powerful I am.
The blond vampire was still staring at me, "What? No warning growls this time?" He provoked.
A low growl built up in my throat and I snarled at him, snapping my jaw, "Ooh, I am so scared!" He continued to make fun of me, "You must be wondering who I am, right?" He asked me, tilting his head to the side.
It was true. I have been wracking my brain, trying to find out who this creature was and why he has been following me around for quite some time now.
"Give her a hint, Frank!" The other vampire joined, and I quickly looked away from Frank just in time to see the dark-haired vampire swinging from tree to tree like a monkey, "She seems like she is losing her s**t now"
Frank laughed as if he finds this entire situation funny, "Okay, let see if this rings a bell in your memory" He said, "Leonard?" He asked, raising his eyebrows a little.
My eyes widened, and my mind went back to the time I helped Elise to retrieve Eleanor from the vampires a few weeks ago. That vampire's name was Leonard if I am not mistaken.
What about him? I thought he took an oath to not interfere in King's life anymore...
My attention was snapped back to them when the blonde vampire started snorting, "Seems like she remembers him" The dark-haired vampire chuckled.
I was starting to get annoyed now. The only reason why I wasn't phasing back to my human form to have a proper conversation with these vampires is that I didn't want to show them my body. I didn't want their eyes feasting upon my skin. I growled again, debating if I should try to climb this tree now.
Seriously what in the world do they want from me?
The dark-haired man laughed again, making my blood simmer under my skin, "Well, good if she remembers him. Leonard said hi!" That was the last thing the vampire said before disappearing into the thin air, leaving no evidence behind him to prove he was there except for the stinking smell.
I looked around me, trying to see where they have vanished but I was alone. Letting out a vivacious growl, I ran back to my pack, all the while thinking what these vampires had to do with Leonard.
Whatever it was, I can hear something in the back of my mind is screaming at me that something is definitely wrong and I would be in trouble soon.
The only thing that I can hope for now is they wouldn't bring my family into this mess as well. I can bear anything in the world but anyone hurting them.
