Chapter Four

Jake             Whenever Davina was not around, all I could think about was Stella. I wondered what she was doing, how she smelt, or if she was thinking about me at all. She had to be in shock or, at the least, confused. Stella knew that she was my mate, yet heard me confess it to another girl. What if she thought it was my way of rejecting her? Please, don't let her believe that. One day, I would shake this spell and find her. I only hoped that it wouldn't be too late.             My mother had told me about second chance mates. They were rare but sometimes happened when the moon goddess felt the wolf deserved a second chance at love. Wherever the moon goddess was, I hoped she could see this was not my choice and that I wanted to be with my real mate. I held a heavy heart, I began imagining what Stella might be going through. Damnit! If I had sucked it all up about that ball, none of this would have happened, at least not before meeting my mate.             It has been four days since I have last seen Davina, which I was happy about. Every time she was near, the spell would kick into overdrive and make me lose all focus. I hated the way it made me feel and act. If it were not for the spell, I would have never found Davina attractive enough to pursue her. Anyone that knew me knew I was waiting for my mate.             A few years ago, I got into a wild phase and slept around with a few girls, but eventually, I snapped out of it. Since then, I haven't as so much kissed another girl because I was waiting for Stella. Images of her standing by my front door came to mind. She was angelic, elegant, and enthralling. I could go on and on with words that came to mind when I thought about her. I briefly wondered what it would be like to kiss those full, heart-shaped lips of hers. Jet was jumping up and down at the idea. Those amber-colored eyes of hers would be engraved in my mind forever.             Priya stormed through my door and jumped on my bed, forcing me to come back to a reality I no longer wanted to be apart of. "Are you going to sulk in your bedroom all week long? Where is that mate of yours? You would think for two newly mated wolves, you wouldn't be able to stay apart from each other."             I was over trying to tell anyone about the spell as it was pointless. Davina had made sure that I would never be able to tell another person as long as the spell held intact. "She is gone out with her pack. I'm not sure when she will be back." The lie rolled off my tongue so easily. Priya knew me better than anyone. One would think she would be able to smell a lie a mile away coming from me.             "Cut the bullshit, Jake. You may be able to lie to your mom or dad, but you cannot lie to me. We are best friends. We have told each other everything since we were old enough to talk. Tell me what is really going on with you."             A small smile crept upon my lips. Davina may be able to control what I say, but she wouldn't be able to control my expressions. "I can't tell you. It's not that I don't want to, but I physically can't." That was as far as the spell would allow me to go. I needed something, anything to take my mind off of the possibility of when Davina would return and what she would want when she did. "Tell me about you and Luke. You two seem to be going strong."             One way to get Priya off my back was to ask her anything about herself. That girl really did love to talk about herself. "Eh. I do like him, but I am not stupid. Lucas is a player who sleeps around with all the she-wolves. He is dumb if he thinks he is getting between these legs of mine." Priya had been saving herself for her mate. The only thing she had ever done is kiss someone, but it has never gone beyond that. Many wouldn't believe that about her, but it was the truth.             "Good, because he is a tool."             She laughed with me for a few minutes before sighing while looking out my bedroom window. "Now that you have found your mate, things will never be the same with us, will they?"             I reached out for her and turned her face back toward me. "Hey, that will never happen. You know how much you mean to me. No one could ever come in between the bond that we share."             "Good, because I will have to kick her ass if she tries." Priya was completely serious. If only she knew that Davina was a vampire and not your everyday run of the mill werewolf.             That got me thinking about how Davina got through all those werewolves undetected. Some of the wolves at the ball were much older and would have known the scent that a vampire carries. So, how did Davina pull one over on so many? She had to have a witch up her sleeve somewhere. That was hard to believe, considering most of the witches kept to themselves. There was only one witch that I have heard of, and her name was Savannah. My mother mentioned that she and her brother Julian helped them when she was pregnant with me. Since then, Savannah has been with the wizard that helped keep my mother and me alive. Every once in a while, she would come by the packhouse to make an appearance, but it was of rare occasion. If only I could somehow talk to her, she could probably help me to understand this spell.             Maybe Priya would know of her whereabouts as her mother, Brooke, worked with Savannah for a while after my birth. "Hey, would you happen to know where Savannah might be these days?"             "Savannah, the witch?" She scoffed. "No. Why in the hell would I know where a witch would be?"             "Your mom used to be close to her, right?"             "Well, yeah, but Jake, no one has heard from Savannah in years. The last I heard, she and Julian were that wizard Aris, learning to master his training. There would be no telling where she might be now. Why are you asking? Does this have anything to do with how you have been stuck inside your room this whole week?"             If Priya was anything, she was consistent and observant. "I told you, I can't talk about it."             Priya got up and stomped toward my door. "I have no idea what the hell your problem is, Jake! We always tell each other everything, and now you are brushing me off to the side. Whatever happened to that pact we made when we were eight? That no matter what..."             "We would never let anything or anyone come in between our friendship," I finished for her. "You just have to trust me. I would never do anything to hurt you or to ruin this friendship."             She casts her eyes to the ground, then pounced in mid-air and landed over top of me, pinning me to the bed as she snapped her teeth at me. "If you won't tell me what is going on with you, then I will have to find out for myself. This is the first time I have ever seen you so down. You should know that you can't hide anything from me." Priya winked, hopped off me, and ran out my door.             I pushed my arms up underneath my head below my pillow. What was going to happen was Priya was going to get herself killed if she pressed this issue. I would have to come up with something fast to make her believe me until I could sort this all out myself.             Sooner or later, I would have to come out of my room to train before my dad came up after me. Neglecting my duties as future Alpha would not sit right with him. For the rest of the week, I would have to train that much harder to get back on track with where I was. I went downstairs to grab myself something to eat after three days of not eating much of anything. My mind was running a hundred miles a minute with no time to think about food. Now that Priya had managed to get my mind off somethings, my stomach rumbled, pleading with me to feed it. I threw four stakes of meat in between two buns with some lettuce and tomatoes. In three big bits, I had devoured the sandwich. It did seem to satisfy my hunger for the time being.             With my wolf hearing, I could tell that my dad would soon be approaching. "Son, I have been looking for you."             "Yeah? What for?"             "I have a meeting in an hour that I need you to attend with me. We have another pack leader interested in making us an ally that has recently moved into the area. Since this would be one of your main duties as Alpha, I need you to attend to gain insight on how these matters are dealt with. Also, I will be leaving the decision up to you as to whether we accept his offer or not."             One more thing to add to the list of issues I had going on today. "Sure, sounds great. I will go upstairs and get ready."             He gave me a quick smile, which was something unusual for him. "That won't be necessary. You look fine as is. We need to go ahead and get prepared. Come with me."             For the next forty minutes, I listened to my dad go on and on about what to look out for and what the right questions to ask were. We waited in his office for another ten minutes before this Alpha was being announced.             "Alpha Nyko from the Goldcrest Pack," Isabel spoke as she held the doors open. Three men walked in, two on either side of the Alpha with a fourth person trailing behind the Alpha, which I could not see.             My dad stood as did I and held out his hand. "A pleasure to meet you, Alpha Nyko. My name is Blake, and I am the Alpha of this here pack. This is my son, Jake, who will be leading this meeting today as he will be the future Alpha if that is alright."             Nyko stared deep into my eyes with what seemed like soulless eyes. Very creepy. He nodded to give his consent rather than speak the words. Once he moved to take a seat across from my father's desk, I was able to see who was standing behind him. I blinked rapidly as I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. It was her. It was my mate, Stella. She noticed me and cast her eyes down away from me.             "Stella, dear, if you could leave us to speak," her father spoke.             She nodded and turned around while looking back over her shoulder at me before leaving the room. My body may have been grounded to this floor, but my heart was walking out that door with her.
