Prologue 2

The five year old grabbed hold of her mother's sash, tugging at it fiercely, “Mother, can we go now?” she asked, huffing as she jumped around impatiently. “Not yet, Averil. Just sit quietly,” her mother responded, trying to keep her in check. “We're supposed to be meeting the Grand Sage, Averil. We can't do that if you don't wait quietly, can we?” Averil shook her head and sat back down, this time she was willing to be silent, restlessly kicking her legs slightly against the seat. The Grand Sage soon appeared, a male omega in his late 30's wearing a large white robe and assisted by a younger female omega who seemed to be an apprentice. His bright blonde hair accompanied by his bright blue eyes made Averil stare in awe. She was reminded of an angel. Averil's mother rose up to bow to him, prompting her daughter to do the same. “Please, sit,” The Grand Sage urged before taking a seat directly opposite their's. Turning to Averil, he smiled at her before beckoning for her to come closer, “Come here, child.” Averil took hold of her formerly abandoned plush toy, and then walked up to him, gripping it tightly. The male smiled at her once more as he put a hand on her head, stroking at her hair. His smile faltered before he furrowed his eyebrows in concentration, pausing his movements and then closing his eyes. She stayed still, only staring at him with questioning eyes and slight amazement. A minute after, he slowly removed his hand from her head, dropping it to her shoulders. “You can go sit down now, child.” She hurried back to her seat, little feet rushing back to her mother's side as fast as they could before turning her attention to the doll in her arms. She glanced between her mother and the Grand Sage, they seemed to be engaged in serious conversation. She wasn't fond of listening in on serious talk, so she resumed playing with her plushie. “... No child of mine!” She heard her mother exclaim. Peeking backwards at where her mother had been seated, Averil saw her face turn red in anger as she was now standing up. It all looked like muted yells and screams to Averil now. The Grand Sage remained seated, eyes shifted away. Focusing, she tried to understand the words leaving her mother's lips. She could barely manage to lipread the words, ‘... never an alpha…’ Her plush toy dropped to the floor. Why couldn't she hear a thing anymore? Was she deaf now? Why did it all sound like she was drifting away from everyone else? What if they were the ones drifting away, leaving her behind? What if— Averil woke up with a gasp, immediately sitting up as panic took over her senses. She had woken up to another forgotten dream.
