Prologue

“Is Dom home yet?” I asked the Omega, who had been hired by Dom’s mother, to take care of me and my needs. Ever since I got sick and suffered the loss of our child, my mate has paid no heed to me. “No, he is not,” her sharpened tone and rolling her eyes when talking back to me seized my attention. “I am off duty now,” she expressed with a sharp intake of breath. And just like that, I was left alone. One would not believe I am not only the Luna of the pack, but also the Alpha, too. Or a supposed alpha!  It would have been nice if I had shifted just like the others, but that didn’t happen to me. I never got my wolf and it only fanned the flames for me. I married Dom because he was supposed to be the Alpha and a mate, who would cam the empty place in my life. He promised the world to me but changed after he realized he cannot stay apart from his one true mate.   “Why did you marry me if you never intended to leave your mate?” I whispered in tears, hardly able to get out of bed.   I had my phone clutched between my hands and my heart was pounding slower than ever. I reckoned if I contacted him, he would get angry at me.   Finally, after much conclusion and persuasion for myself, I dialed his number.   The storm was setting in; the thunder rumbling terrified me from standing adjacent to the windows. The pelting shower of rain and the lightning illuminated my dimly lit room while I prepared to speak to my mate.   “Hello?” He finally picked up the call and asked in a grumpy voice. Right off the bat, I fathomed he didn’t like me calling him.   “Dom! When are you coming home?” I was using a sweet tone. I remember he liked my melodic voice, he made me sing for him when we first got married.   It was different when he was nice to me. I felt like I had escaped the harsh reality of the world but it all crumbled down in no time.   “You called me just to ask me when I’m getting back home?” his harsh tone and aggressive manner of talking didn’t shock me. It had been like that for the last few months. He had changed after he married his true mate and tossed me to the side.   “It’s because I’m worried about you. The storm is---,” I don’t know who I was fooling this time.     It was pretty evident from the way he was talking to me that he didn’t appreciate me bothering him. My concerns were mine only now. He wouldn’t bat an eye at my troubles. And yet here I was, convincing him I still care about him even after so much happened between us and he put me through.   “I’m an Alpha, I’m not you who cannot handle a storm,” his dismissive tone got me gasping a little.   “What is that supposed to me?” I asked, dew filling my eyes as his comment struck my ego. I was asking for another heartbreak when giving him a chance to explain the mockery he was making of me. I should have understood he was taunting me.   “Didn’t you get our baby killed?” his comment shook me; he was blaming me for my child’s death?   “How have I killed our baby? My health declined. How is it my fault?” this would be the first time that I have defended myself. He and his family had been accusing me of many things, but incriminating that I killed my baby is where he took it too far.   “Because you wanted to be with your damn lover,” He raised his voice while he was probably with his clients, not caring they would hear it.   “That is not tr---,” he didn’t let me finish and hung up on my face. I was in shock.   He believed that he had been fed by everyone. It seemed like my world was going downhill and pretty fast, too.   “I should ask Gina why she is making my life miserable?” while tears sprung down my eyes, I fought to stride out of the room in search of her.   She was nobody until I let her stay around, and is that how she repaid me?   In this whole enormous mansion, it was only her and I that night. The weather was so bad that I could barely hear my heartbeat. The wind crashing against the windows had created a scary ambiance too.   After walking downstairs to where the library was, I expected to find her there. She had adapted all my habits to convince my husband she was no less than me. What made her even more special was her wolf, even if she was an Omega.   “Gina!” I called to her, even finding the library empty. Just when I was going to turn around and leave, the lights went out. “Oh my God!” I gasped in fright, looking around to spot anything in the darkness. That’s when I felt a bone-chilling feeling of not being alone. Before I could even learn about my surroundings, I got attacked. Somebody had wrapped a belt around my neck and locked it. “Who ar---,” I couldn’t turn around, neither could I see who it was. I just knew it was a man, a powerful werewolf.
